Mad Monk you will soon learn that all sorts of opinions are debated on this forum and as long as yours fits in with the 'special few' you will get along fine. I am not saying I agree with your idea but I always believe in being a 'Maverick' in ones views.

Freedom of speech is good, and people do move from forwards to backs. But. Not in this case

So...... he's not big enough for the pack, but he's a big guy with good hands, and he's quick, and he's big???

He is big enough for the pack. Speed and good hands are an asset for forwards, not a handicap

Let's compromise and play him at wing forward, (openside) to make use of his speed and long reach to win penalties against those not releasing. I suggested this ages ago and was ignored. At least you're being ridiculed.

Agreed.
Worth a look now, particularly with Josh's injury.

I agree, wing forward, as for Mad Monk's idea, it's a bit of a brain storming thought and usually the maddest idea is usually the best one. Arron on the wing, not as daft as it sounds.

What do we know about his kicking game Mad Monk? The back three need to have good kicking skills, both in attack and defence. Somebody probably knows something about his kicking skills, hence he is not on the wing.....maybe?

We are short of forwards and somebody then suggests moving one of the better ones on to the wing. Bonkers idea as far as i'm concerned!

I can understand the logic personally however I would be more inclined to play Pugh on the wing (as I believe the Ospreys did). This gives the advantage of having a specialist scavenging forward amongst the outside backs - meaning you should not lose posession as frequently out wide. He is quicker than Shingler and could do a job.

I've said for a while that Aaron should look to develop into a Tom Croft-style no. 6 - quick and useful in the lineout. No problem with the idea of trying him as a 7, though - especially now. (this shows again that what we really lack is a couple of strong, bulky second rows). As has been said - Shingler would be no worse in the backs than Banahan, but we have a lot of talent in the centre and on the wings already, so I don't see that being tried unless we have a disastrous run of injuries! |

Its a worry for Shingler that he hasn't yet tied down a regular position. There is a strong possibility that he will only ever be a utility forward like Jonathon Thomas unless he can either
a. put on more weight and be an athletic lock or
b. find his best position in the back row and develop into a top class player in that position.
I think he is a fantastic player but I always think that players suffer if they show ability to play in too many positions - just like backs. He and the region need to make a definite decision on his future and work flat out to develop him in that position. I think they want this to be lock, but I can't see him ever being heavy enough personally.
