Clubs playing in the top tier of French rugby will be able to make up to 12 substitutions during a match, though the match day squad will still be comprised of 23 players. A player who has been taken off for tactical reasons will be able to re-enter the match to replace an injured player.

The Top 14 are also following in the footsteps of New Zealand club rugby and introducing a blue card system this coming season in a bid to better deal with on-field concussions. New Zealand Rugby and all the Mitre 10 Cup provincial unions introduced the system 12 months ago whereby referees have the power to 'blue card' any player they suspect of having been concussed. If a referee suspects an obvious sign of concussion, the official can remove that player from the field of play permanently and subsequently, that player must undergo a mandatory 10-day rest period.

Not sure I am a fan of either of these points really, especially the blue card as I can see an increased amount of pressure on officials.

[beep]ing stupid since when is a ref a doctor? Try sticking to their own jobs and leave it as it is. Don't mind the full bench idea.

Over ruling the doctor. We’ve seen examples of concussed players carrying on.

It isn't going to help the problem of lack of fitness amongst top French players. Play a 6-2 bench and keep rotating the forwards. It turns the game into an impact game like American football.

This is what I was kind of thinking, it says up to 12 substitutions so I wonder if there is anything that says you cant bring a prop off after 20 minutes for another one, then reverse it at half time, then after 60 minutes repeat the original substitution.

I think they are going the wrong way. The school of thought championed by amongst others Brian Moore is to force players to play more minutes thereby reducing the bulking up to make them fitter. The contention is that fresh bulked up players entering the game against many who are tired increases the likelihood of injury.

So feasibly 5 minutes before half time if your team has an important scrum you can sub on a better scrummaging prop and a heavier second row to try and win a penalty or penalty try and then take them back off?
Shocking idea.
