Without Warren Gatland to put his metaphorical foot in his mouth for the first time in 13 years, it was nice to see Eddie Jones step up to the challenge of uttering some spectacular back-firing pre-tournament mind games. This was after saying, "We want to be remembered as the greatest team that ever played rugby." Embarrassed

France can expect absolute brutality from England, we are going to go out there to make sure they understand what Test rugby is. It is about being brutal, it is about being physical and it is about dominating the set piece.
I think France understand, Eddie. Ouch

It was an especially stupid thing to say, considering that Billy Vunipola was out and his brother hadn't been picked... the loss of Tuilagi didn't help their 'brutality' quotient, either...

FWIW, it looked as if England had the edge in the scrums, but not really anywhere else... Farrell learnt all about 'brutality' after an early encounter with Vakatawa led to him dropping two routine passes... he looked semi-stunned, but stayed on.

Apart from the individual brilliance of Jonny May, England had nothing to offer on the day. It would have been downright embarrassing, but for May, TBH.
I share no-one's ideas. I have my own.

England have been found out many times...take away the vunipolas and tuilagi and they lose their power game...then what have they got? A decent enough scrum, a mess of back row players out of position. endless different combos in midfield ,changing scrum halves a lot, farrell class player but hot headed and prone to illegal tackles and a coach who does the oppositions speeches for them lol

France weren’t even that good. But that will give them a huge boost and they will smash italy this week compounding their confidence.

Got to worry about how much edwards will help the french
I was always deeply concerned about this when the wru didnt nail him down, this marriage is a perfect storm , marriage made in hell lol
The french have power player base talent flair
But the parts they lack discipline organization defensive structure are all edwards specialisties
If he harnesses the wounded cockerel look out

The weekend went as I expected really, comfortable win for us with some plus points though Italy were very poor.

I had England to lose out in France, was a bit annoyed with Les Bleus for giving them a LBP. Thought Farrell was awful & just didn't look like he knew what to do. Rumour is Tuilagi was carrying a knock hence having two centres on the bench, if true that that is just stupidity from Eddie! The French half back pairing seemed very bright & lively. I'm amazed that England seem unable to produce any good young scrum halves, seems to be a problem area for us.

Ireland were solid if unspectacular in their victory, won the game thanks to their work over the ball in defence & also to the brain fart from Hogg.

Considering how strong the Italian U20s seem & how well their 2 club sides are playing at the moment, I am not sure what's going wrong for the Italians at international level & the inevitable questions about whether they deserve their place in the tournament will be asked.

Looking forward to this weekend, I fancy us to beat Ireland, I can't see Scotland beating England & I think France will put 40 points on Italy.

I agree. Edwards did an excellent job with us and will no doubt do the same with France. Will we rue the day we let him leave?

When come out questions about Italian presence in 6N I say, Would do you like to have a Weekend in Rome or in Tblisi?
At the moment there isnt a better solution for the sixth partecipant, but I think that in a near future, South Africa will be the solution...

Yes for all their playing base they are struggling. The absence of Mako was self inflicted - clearly their new forward coach Proudfoot advised Eddie that South Africa targeted him. England's power game is based on the Vunipolas & Tuliagi - take that away and their pack become fairly ordinary.

Tuilagi has been carrying a groin injury for 6 weeks so it shows that England's strength in depth isn't what it seems. They are struggling at prop, no 8 and back 3. Quite where the next generation of scrum halves are coming from I don't know. Neither of their 9's would get in our squad & I would select Rhodri ahead of both. Eddie's Aussie gob is also a total liability. Finally on England its no wonder Woodward is so upset over them not selecting Tompkins.

As for next weekend we have two real crackers. Scotland played well I thought and looked far more organised defensively, Eddie is not taking advice about getting in a proper No 8 so it looks as if Curry gets the shirt again. As for our game in Dublin - we really need a massive improvement in our set piece to have any chance. If we do get that improvement then it will be a good close game.

I know what you're saying Mr Ian, however nothing seems to be changing for Italy & is can't continue really.

As we are trying to improve 2nd tier rugby should we not really be considering expanding the whole competition to include sides like Georgia, Fiji & Japan. Not at the expense of Italy but to include other nations. A conference system could be devised with a play off semi/finals.

Alternatively the pressure will mount on the 6 nations to get involved in a World league which they are currently fighting against as clearly they are sitting on the crown jewel tournament.

May have to go back to go forwards. ie back to Five Nations by dropping Italy into Div 2.  Then have a play off game (or two) between top of div 2 and bottom of the Five.

Does that really solve the problem. I get the promotion bit but 2nd tier sides need exposing to big games. Italy's development has been disappointing I accept.

I know what you're saying Mr Ian, however nothing seems to be changing for Italy & is can't continue really.

FIR trying to improve the development of young rugby and the under 20 results of last years are better then 10 y ago, but the production of talent is restricted only in few region, Veneto (Treviso area) and in minor view Lombardia (Milano) Toscana( Florence) and Emilia Romagna(Parma). The rest of country is isolated and we have to fight against drop out of young players..
Veneto are the same people of Wales, about 5 M, but it s not enough for competing in 6N's...
Also at the moment the real difficoult is the development of U20 players to senior rugby. Our national tournament is scandalous and absolutely boring rugby, the two franchigie cant run the role of development teams, history teachs us that this kind of model doesnt work, look at the first Connacht..
But at the same time we receive important money from the board that we cant able to invest in decent way, Argentina e Georgia doing far better than us without 6N money...
Our last hope was O 'Shea, but when he understood how works everything in Italy, he ran away fastly...
In the days fans talking so much about italy and its results, many are angry, I can understand...me from many times have an ascetic view of situation, Im Scarlets and Wales fan and tnx god we have many rugby to watch in television or pc, Super Rugby is yet started last week...so we have to find a reason about it, rugby is not an our sport for italians, and dont have the sport culture for understand deeply rugby and its pro development.

Have a 6 or 7 nations second division
Get some tv money behind it
Winner plays the bottom side in 6 nations over 2 legs
Winner goes into 6 nations division 1

13 Georgia
16 Spain
18 Romania
20 Russia
22 Portugal
27 Belgium
28 Germany
Bottom side plays the next  best ranked european team over 2 legs to get into 6 nations division 2
