Hurricanes captain Brad Shields looks set to tour South Africa with England in June after handing in a formal request to the New Zealand Rugby Union.

New Zealand-born Shields, who qualifies for England through his parents, will join Wasps later this year.

England head coach Eddie Jones sees the flanker as part of his plans going through to next year's World Cup.

But New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) say they will make the final decision on 27-year-old Shields' availability.

"We've only just this morning got a formal request to consider releasing Brad," NZRU boss Steve Tew told the NZ Herald.

"He's contracted to New Zealand until the end of Super Rugby [in August]."

And England are desperately short of back row players!  They've already got a lot of time servers as well as home grown players, spoiled for choice.

Brad Shields has indeed been named in the England squad to tour South Africa with Danny Cipriani receiving a recall. Owen Farrell with skipper the side due to the unavailability of Dylan Hartley.

Well the selection of Shields will further unstable the England set up. Jones is clearly admitting that his back row is not up to International standard. To most of us this has been clear for sometime with only Vunipola who could be classed as International. By all means select Shields for the Autumn when he has played for Wasps for a few months.

The message it also ends to England players playing in France is a little confusing. Me thinks Eddie is getting himself in a right state as he has let the breakdown battle overtake him big time.

I agree GPR, the message is a bit of a joke for current English back rowers...

Vunipola seems to be going from one injury to another...

England can't win sometimes. They get slated for not having a proper backrower in their system. They get one, without breaking any world rugby laws, and they're still the bad guys.

I think they made their own issue here by refusing to pick one Steffon Armitage for all this time while he has been in France & now they have picked a guy who (yes you're right under World Rugby rules he can be selected for England) hasn't played a game of rugby in England. Yes I know he is going to Wasps next year but still...

I really don't understand the issue. He'll be playing in England. Steffon Armitage wasn't playing in England.
