A group of former international players, including world cup winner Steve Thompson, are to sue the games authorities for negligence. All the players involved have been diagnosed with early signs of dementia.

Thompson cannot remember playing in any of the games during the 2003 World Cup Win, of which he played every game.

Indeed, the article suggests claims are being made against (& being sent to) the governing bodies of English & Welsh Rugby along with World Rugby.

Our own Alix Popham is involved in this & did undergo various testing along with Thompson & 5 others.

"All eight players to have come forward so far have been diagnosed by neurologists at King's College, London, with early onset dementia and probable Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)."

They are indeed very scary. This issue will make the problems of the past 9 months feel like small fry.

I'm sure post-NFL concussion some of us were saying it was only a matter of time before this happened in Union?

Thompson saying he can't remember any of the games he played in during the WC win and forgetting his wife's name... Scary. Plus interesting he said he didn't even like rugby that much.

The article is talking about first professionals, how relevant to current times is this do people think?

This could have major ramifications down the structure as there will be pressure on unions to ensure the wellbeing of amateur players.

I still don't think match officials are doing enough to protect players.

BBC article mentions players currently active now: "Lawyers for the group suggest another 80 former players between the ages of 25 and 55 are showing symptoms and have serious concerns."

I think, I cannot recall where, I read that there is a similar movement with former All Blacks about to surface though they could be part of the same group with Popham & Thompson.

With the size of the current collisions Iā€™d imagine that it would be hugely relevant. While reducing contact training time and lowering the point of contact would be helpful, in my opinion the only thing close to a solution for this problem is to reduce the impact of the collisions. To do that players need to be smaller and the main way to do that in my opinion is to reduce the number of tactical substitutions. Of course, rugby will never be safe, however I do believe that it can be made a lot safer than it currently is.

Yep, though I am not sure what else can be done really laws wise. The impact of being taken out at a ruck is big at our level, God only knows what it's like at professional levels!!
