All Blacks captain Tana Umaga has received the Pierre Coubertin Trophy for assisting an injured opponent.
He won the award, presented by the International Committee of Fair Play, for aiding Colin Charvis of Wales after he was knocked unconscious. The incident happened during a Test match in June, 2003. "It's a great honour," Umaga said in a statement. "Sport is competitive but it doesn't mean that we should look the other way when an opponent is injured." Umaga rushed to help Charvis after he was knocked out in a tackle during the game in Hamilton. While play continued, he removed Charvis' mouthguard, ensured he did not swallow his tongue and placed him in the recovery position. Umaga had previously been honoured by the Welsh Rugby Union who presented him with a special award during the 2003 World Cup in Australia.

Been a big fan of Umaga for years and years, a true professional who has stood the test of time to remain competitive and in the All Blacks squad. A thoroughly deserved award for such an act of kindness. All round tidy bloke |
