We are Con Air. You will be assimilated. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.

Valid points.
We have signed younger players as mentioned but if they continue to rise in the game as they already have, will be able to hold on to them when contracts expire. |

How would this work? Central contracts in Wales?
The regions are owned by businessmen. Individuals. How would their best assets / employees suddenly be paid by someone else? If it keeps our best players here that's allw ell and good. But when North, Foxy etc play only 2 out of 6 Heineken Cup games a year because their employers want them to be at training camps for the national team we'll have to think again. It's all or nothing with central contracts. |

It's nothing without them I'm afraid. The key thing is being clever in thrashing out the terms of reference to satisfy all parties... Let's hope the key stakeholders are represented. Nigel has put his hand up, well chuffed with that. |

It is a common and worrying topic these days unfortunately! It needs to be addresses though because the Welsh regions simply can't compete financially with the French and other nations splashing out!
It is all very well us saving money, and developing young players, but if we can't keep hold of them when they mature due to our limited finances, then what is the point! We shouldn't be looked at as development regions for the super rich clubs!
A rugby career is so short these days, you can't expect players to be loyal throughout their career just to satisfy the shirt they are playing for. Once a players rugby career is over, they have to move on to other interests, and usually, not as lucrative as what they've been used to being paid as a professional rugby player.
We all strive to earn more money, better our finances in the jobs that we do, and we're always looking for that move to better our futures, and make them financially secure for our kids, and rugby players alike are no different.
If, and when the contracts are up for players like Preistland and North etc, they get offers from places like France that are nearly two or three times the offer that we can put on the table, then you can't really blame them for wanting to move clubs, and experiencing a different way of live for a few seasons. I wouldn't want to stop them going either, that wouldn't be fair!
What the regions and the WRU need to do, is think of ways in which we can keep our best players playing in Wales. It needs to happen, and it needs to happen soon, otherwise, our fantastic youth that has developed over the past few seasons will be gone before we know it! How about, the IRB step in, & create a law that prevents any Tier 1 or Tier 2 nation player leaving their home nation until at least 28 years old !
That would benefit both International & Club Rugby ... Mind you, there'd probably be an element of "restriction of trade" in there somewhere !

Restriction of trade. I am no emploment legal boff but its all about economics. Whats the difference in France holding all the cards in rugby finances and attracting all the best players than France loosing all the best footballers to the the likes of the premiership and La Liga. The Dutch have always lost all their best players to foreign leagues because they cannot afford to keep them. Go back 30-40 years when Scotland used to produce loads of class footballers even with the Old Firm teams they could not keep the best players because of the lure of the money from clubs down south and thats when footballers were paid peanuts. You sometimes get what you deserve, if the Welsh public appreciated what they had and filled the grounds then the Regions could possibly compete with the wages being demanded. They don't and probably never will. Loyalty to a club is one thing but its a two way street and we need to remember these lads are trying to make a decent living from their relatively short careers. What do you think has probably helped in Steve and Dwayne's restaurant investment, I'll tell you its upping sticks and earning a few quid whilst they can.
