I agree Wil, I think (personally) that Barclay has helped Aaron & Cubby to step up to the next level.

Makes huge sense for top experienced players to mentor young prospects. Barclay will certainly have influenced many back row players. I have also noticed Steff Hughes showing many aspects of Hadleighs game this season.
I hope that some of Leigh's magnificent defensive positioning and general defensive play can be picked up by Steff & Conbeer. Both these players, admittedly at different starting points, are natural attacking players. Improved defensive abilities will see them go a very long way.

That's a good point - the mind-set of many back 3 players is that they're there to score as many tries as possible, but that defending is something of a chore... 1/2p has always been superb in defence - fearless despite being comparatively small, rarely misses a high ball, and has excellent positioning. Steff's defence has improved a lot, but can still get better... Conbeer is at the start of the process.

With arhip and lewis plys gethin and gill the blues props now look good. If the blues get a decent lock or two they can challenge for the title, their back row strength is superb They have two cracking young half backs, two game breakers in the centre and some good attackers in the back 3. Plus they won't lose that many players to the welsh set up. This coach looks very underwhelming to me but if he is any good then they will be a real threat to the rest of the league. The ashtrays season will live and die on their new tight heads and on sam davies at 10. If Botha can anchor their scrum and davies gets back to his best form they will be a strong outfit at pro 14 level and could push for a play off . If Davies struggles then they have huge problems in a key position. Their other big worry is a lack of depth at centre especially when watkin and scott with wales. Plus a lack of cover at 8 if king goes down (baker not back till nearly Christmas) Dragons look stronger with hibbard moriarty and Rhodri but jackman looks useless to me , they won't push for a play off spot Edited by RR1972 - 21 June 2018 at 12:19pm |

halfpenny heart of a lion, great positional play and superb under the high ball But his tackling technique at times is dreadful, he often gets his head in the wrong place (has led to several head injuries for him) conbeer and ioan have proably got a better tackling technique already but as you point out they are miles behind him in positional know how and can learn a lot from him there

You are quite right about i/2p's tendency to put his head in harm's way - I have written about this in other threads! As far as tackling is concerned, he usually - not always - gets his man down, or at least slows him up, but it can come at a cost to his noggin. That is certainly one aspect of his game that 1/2p himself could improve, maybe by watching tapes of Shane W or GTR Davies - small guys with good technique. (I still remember Gerald saving a try against France - the French player was diving over the line, Gerald took him from the side and rolled him first onto his back, and then into touch-in-goal. Amazing - and really skilful.)

JPR's tackle by the corner flag on the French winger Gourdon would now get a red card. Unless of course he was an AB when he'd get told that he was 'a very naughty boy' |

I just love that tackle - and the scornful look JPR gave the prone Gourdon afterwards!

And fwiw I don't think conbeer is anywhere near the tackler 1/2p is. Did miss way too many during the world champs recently, despite his great tries
