good question. lets not forget its only the first year of
judgement last year. added to the fact the regional game has been extremely poor and lost endless stars added to the endless infighting hasnt helped
the english derbies at twickenham have happened for many years
they even sold wembley out
they have the population etc but we can at leats maximize the potential of what we have too
the mill stadium is the best rugby stadium in the world and adds thousands, tens of thousands to whatever event is held at the venue
I really do believe that easter sunday is a brilliant time for this event. the event itself is 10 years overdue. (id have 2 double headers at the mill stadium over the season , its a no brainer, it brings in tens of thousands who dont normally attend, it makes money and promotes our regions too) we tap into the expats coming home for easter too
Id like to think we can top 40,000 this time around. but it wont be easy with so many absentee stars. we need to really use the occasion to promote everything from our region.
could we negotiate an agreement which allows us to sell scarlets memorabillia, jerseys, season tickets at the stadium for this one off event?

It must be a different market, more akin to the international market, which as we know even in Wales has less and less in common with the professional rugby market. Neither Saracens nor Harlequins have very large home grounds, so even if you combined the crowds they would get, say, for a home HC quarter-final - they've still managed to find another 50,000 people on top of that.
Judgement day, OTOH, is targetting the maximum joint crowds for the respective Welsh derbies, and that's just about what it will get. I don't suppose it would occur to the regions to try to attract the cowboy hat and daffodil costumed supporter looking for a day out in the capital - and the disdain shown for that type of supporter by most regular followers of pro rugby in Wales doesn't help. Reading this forum and others, it would be easy to come to the conclusion that, while we bemoan the small crowds we get at the moment, and are irritated that more people don't come to watch pro rugby, what we really want is more people like us to come and watch it, and the sad fact may be that all the people like us already do! |

there is a bit of anti cowboy hat snobbery....the way I see it is if you want to go and support welsh rugby then jump on board the fun bus....the more the merrier I dont care if you riding into the stadium on horseback in a borat mankini, as long as you have a ticket for tonto

I don't mind all this 'dressing up and making a fun day out'. Until they start booing their own players, which some 'people' seem to see as their right to do, having paid for an expensive ticket/costume/gallon of cider.
I have plenty of friends who go to the various Big Sarries, Quins & England Games, none particularly knowledgeable about the game, but they enjoy themselves in good spirits whoever wins. Now't wrong with that, if it gets their cash in our tills and they have a good time that they'd happily repeat. |

In London many people go without any support for a side, just for the atmospshere. In Wales everyone has a view on regional rugby, the fighting with the WRU has split people even more. Areas like the Valleys aren't going to go as they believe they should have a region so wont support the others. A smaller population split by support for regional rugby will always draw less. I think it would be easier splitting the tickets between the regions with their own separate areas to create an atmosphere and having an amount for people on the day just to turn up and go

Dan the Drover makes a very good point about the Wembey and double header matches in the Aviva being akin to Intenational crowds at the MS. Still very hard to get hold of tickets for 6N or AI matches against the big three SH at Twickenham unless you are directly linked to a rugby club or corporate hospitality. So there is always a decent market for a rugby day out for the passive follower.

The old Schweppes Cup Final uses to fill out and now we are struggling to sell forty thousand tickets when you have four teams involved. Welsh people it seems are never happy. We have a cracking stadium one of the best in the World.
