Sunday Times UK rich list has three billionaires listed for Wales.
One of these is the founder of Specsavers who is worth £1.4 billion. He was born in Llanelli and has links with Ammanfod as well. Wonder if he would be interested in helping the Scarlets as well as referees. Parc y Specsavers maybe. Just a thought. |

If he could "see his way" to a bit of sponsorship it would be nice

Specsavers founder Doug Perkins was born in Llanelli, brought up in Ammanford, played 2nd row for Ammanford RFC.
I think I'm right in saying that he's been reluctant to invest in the past, but as Llandre said, there's been talk on here of late of him contributing to our academy.

I was told that he was funding our academy by a member of the board.

We have been down this route before and the Board are of course we'll aware but all we can do is tempt as best we can all the time as at the end of the day it's his money. Small steps in the future aka the Academy is a great start though!

It looks as if there will be a bit of a cull to the academy at the end of the season- so it doesn't seem to be a money-saving exercise.

It has confused me for a while why he isn't a bigger contributor. He has said in an interview that he loves the Scarlets so why not be our Boujellal? £1.4B is an awful awful lot of money, the sort that it's almost impossible to spend and sticking £10m into the Scarlets would be like me giving them a fiver. Shame he hasn't got the bug like we have.

He'd have to do it quietly as fans of the other regions might hold it against Specsavers and go elsewhere.

I'll be giving his intervention and support of the Academy a cautious welcome.
Successful business men/women aren't usually persuaded to part with their money without something in return. |
