I haven't got a clue to be honest, but it's definitely for the best.

Swansea should be in the premiership, as should Gogledd Cymru. Tough shit on Ponty, they havent played ball with their regional team from the start. You make your bed... Good luck to Merthyr I say, it would be great news for a town that gets shit all usually.
I'm all for this proposal, its obviously what good people like Bucks see as the way forward and no-one knows more about rugby at this level than him. Makes you wonder what the F**k Pickering actually did for his huge salary. More happening in the last few months than has happened for years. |

The current Championship is a little un-balanced...studied it a bit since Emlyn got promoted to it (!).
Clubs like Swansea, Pontypool, Bargoed and now Merthyr are funded enough and call on enough players to be in an extended Prem, with RGC effectively a WRU franchise too. Think this would give the Championship a better balance. |

PS-it's also mental to think of Emlyn's 'free training togs and season end tour night out' remunerated squad packing down against the likes of Matthew Rees, Goughie and Andy Powell next season.

I have a feeling they might be the best dressed squad though. |

seeing as there are huge gaps in the fixture list an increased premiership makes a lot of sense
especially if the b&i cup is now a regional a tournament. would be a real boost for the semi pro sides and help them generate more income and have settled season great idea imo ps thomas is on about spending £500k to transform merthyr rfc, well if he signs all the players he;s linked with the vast ammount of that will go in salary for the next 2 years, 3 years at max and then all of the players will retire in 1 hit and they will be back to square 1, (exactly the same thing happened when titley, sutton, hillman etc all retired together years ago) for a club in the semi pro second divison to have 5/6 ex test players all welll into their 30's is frankly ridiculous and certainly not what the idea of this league or even the premiership is all about exactly how is signing molitika, filise, etc developing the game in wales?

The Principality Welsh Premiership could be split into a conference style two-tier division next season.
WalesOnline revealed earlier this month, plans are on the table to expand Welsh rugby’s second tier to 16 teams next season to bump up the fixture list should Premiership Select XVs compete in the British and Irish Cup instead of club sides. Now we’ve learned that in a further innovative move to revamp the Premiership, the 16 teams are set to be split into two groups of eight mid-season depending on where they are in the table. Both divisions will then battle it out for the remainder of the season before, at the tail end of the campaign, further play-offs will take place to decide the title and relegation places. It’s a system that has been employed by the Welsh Premier Football League over the years with 12 teams being split into two groups of six mid-season. Then there is an incentive for the team finishing top of the bottom pool because the seventh-placed club go into play-offs with the top six for European places. As yet it’s unclear what the incentive would be in the second half of the season for those teams in the lower division of the rugby Premiership, though if the tier is not ring-fenced avoiding relegation would be one. To complicate matters further there is the suggestion there could be a Premiership Cup competition on the weekend of the British and Irish Cup in which clubs are to be replaced by Premiership Select XVs. Plans for the rugby Premiership plus the British and Irish Cup were addressed at a meeting of the WRU full board on Wednesday. But, after taking advice from the governing body’s officers, they decided to give more time so further investigations and another attempt at brokering peace between warring outfits Cardiff Blues and Pontypridd over the future of the B&I Cup can take place. Merthyr’s ambitious plans on and off the field at The Wern, funded by multi-millionaire Sir Stan Thomas, is also thought to be a thorny subject, the WRU need more time to think over. Though the clubs are open-minded about an expanding of the Premiership. they want WRU rules on admission to the league adhered to. As it stands, three Championship clubs – second-placed finishers Swansea, fourth-placed RGC and fifth-placed Pontypool – had the required A licence in place by the WRU-imposed deadline of August last year and which would enable them to take up a place in the Premiership. But Championship winners Bargoed and ambitious Merthyr, who came third, do not have a licence, which is handed out when clubs meet certain standards in terms of facilities and other issues. Sir Stan Thomas insists the ambitious Championship club will have all the required facilities in place at The Wern to join the Premiership, if it is expanded for next season. However should the WRU dispense with the deadline date for meeting A licence criteria putting Merthyr up into the Premiership, at the expense of, for example, Pontypool, it could result in legal action being taken against the governing body.
