IRFU have decided to give the provinces an extra £2.27 million pounds in order to try and combat the financial threat of the French clubs. If only the WRU could do something similar...

I still wake up late at night and think of what might have been when tim stimpson hit that jammy penalty1

The Irish understand the value and importance of domestic rugby. We are already uncompetitive in Europe and this will make the Welsh regions fall behind in the Pro12. We've already seen investment in the Scottish city teams.
The consequences will be further disillusionment with the club game in Wales which will ultimately filter through to the national team as kids walk away from the sport.
The WRU simply has no option but to follow suit or decide that we fall further behind our northern hemisphere competitors.
Unless there is a reaction in Wales, this could be devastating.

There is hope for the Welsh regions with the new CEO Martyn Phillips seeming eager to work with the regions & build up pro rugby in Wales.

Although it won't be easy trying to claw back five years of under funding during Rogers reign over our game.

That's the crux of it...we are perennially one step behind and although stride length is now at least the same as other governing bodies, it means we aren't catching up.

First challenge is player retention at the end of this season. Can we stem the flow. No signs of it as yet.

Phillips has a tough remit, rhetoric is good, let's see how the action comes through and backs it up. Hopeful.

FWIW Gatland is going about selecting a squad that (to me) suggests he won't be around in the autumn to face up to any criticism from those he has de-connected with (and there's a lot).

In terms of re=hydrating he scorched earth between the WRU and the regions, I consider Gotland's departure would signal the buying of some hosepipes.

They still won't admit they spend as much as the French and English on their squads.

And they're still going to add a few million Euros to the real figure.

It's going to take alot to change things. For today's warm-up game (Ireland v Scotland) the Aviva is about 2/3s full. Last week the Millenium was full (?) and yet the Irish provinces get far larger crowds than we do. It goes all the way back to the start and the closure of the Warriors. Why commit to a region if they can be closed down?

We need all the things discussed endlessly on here- more funds, standard K/O times, etc etc

To be fair, ticket prices had an effect on today's game in Dublin. They were nowhere near £20 like in Cardiff. But your point is correct. We are light years behind because of the way Welsh rugby has been run in the last decade.

I think you're right about the kind of squad Gatland is selecting. His departure will,I hope, allow meaningful and frank debate on the way the game is played.Rugby thinking has become far too homogeneous-to a large extent the way Wales play has become a template for the professional game here. The old club system was an environment where different coaching philosophies flourished ,where there were hugely contrasting styles of play. The English Premiership is able to accommodate difference,as is the French league, and indeed, the Irish provinces can never be said to play the same way.I believe that things will change after the World Cup;it could be said that change is already underway in Llanelli, where Pivac is resolutely challenging existing orthodoxy.
