I suspect he will be more sensible than his outlandish vote getting comments indicate if heaven forbid he becomes Mr President as he will be surrounded by controlling advisers and will have the usual battles with both houses on legislation. I hope so anyway!

I saw the Bear Grylls programme with Obama and it was more enlightening than many a political show. Obama said that you'd think that being President allowed him freedom to act but he said he was basically gagged. A President Trump (although highly unlikely, which means the first black president will be followed by the first female) would have to conform a hell of a lot more than he'd like. It's amazing that a man with absolutely no record of any kind of public office could become the singularly most influential man in the world. As a staunch anti-royalist myself, these are the kind of things that would make me back a hereditary head of state! |

You'd like to think that Hilary would get in, but you can almost predict that she will get trumped () in the last couple of weeks when another Clinton scandal 'suddenly' emerges.

Roy, that seems like a pretty good summary of where we're at - at the moment.

And nearer home, according to a recent 'Private Eye' story, Gideon Osborne pulled off a cunning plan which resulted in his family company paying a lot less tax!

The USA constitution had - originally for good reasons - a lot of 'checks and balances' built in. Unfortunately, these days the result is that it makes the president effectively powerless in many areas outside foreign policy (where, by the way, Obama's agreement to the use of drone strikes is a pretty controversial issue). Fair play, though - for all its imperfections, Obama did manage to improve health care for many citizens (Obamacare), where Hilary C failed during the last Clinton administration. It was only by making concessions (horse trading) that Obama managed to get Congress to agree to even this watered down American version of the much derided 'socialist medicine' that we suffer in this country!

The American public just doesn't like Clinton. No one reason, they just don't. I think Sanders knows it and with his campaigns deep pockets he's going to stick around. He's the best hope for a credible President.
The lunacy of protesting at Trump rallies has only served to galvanise support for him. I'd like to think common sense will prevail but when you see where he is winning hands down you really wouldn't have though that was his key demographic. That's the worry. Arizona will be the best yardstick yet. |

I imagine the Republican Party are gutted about Rubio, albeit how much was done to support him? But if the Republicans do their utmost to unseat Trump, but he does get the nomination will middle of the road Republicans vote for him?

I think that's my concern, as at now they are.
He's picking up super delegates by the boat load too ( although they are pledges not votes per se of course)... Clinton too. The best bet is that he will implode by making one or a string of silly own goals...and I also still have the feeling that a tangible percentage of his vote is based on ( at best ) flakey and shallow logic and when the chips are down he will be Royally Kinnock'd. I thought Rubio had something about him, guess his time will come. Edited by Wil Chips - 16 March 2016 at 8:34pm |

That's what mainstream neo-cons are afraid of - that they will not be able to control him, that he will un-do much of what they have spent so much time and effort setting up to control the world as they want to. Right wing Americans don't care how stupid their presidents are - just look at Reagan who could barely read an auto-cue or answer simple questions, and fell asleep during vital meetings. So long as he would sign the documents they put in front of him they were happy. The last thing they want is someone who may not sign the documents and can justify this with popular support.

Trump is way smarter than regan, hes using the fact hes self financing his campaign as a massive tool in proving hes not a corporate lackey. Hes even using the fact his opponents are spending tens of millions on negative adverts as a negative against them. There's a surreal clip today where trump is celebrating in the trump ballroom about trumps latest victory, talking about presenting a golf trophy to adam scott at the Donald trump golf tournament, everythings going great he says, then a a dreadful anti trump advert comes on the tv, its a disaster.....his sons behind him all laughing their heads off,...surreal.

Rubio apparently thought that God wanted him to be president. Looks like God is becoming more and more inconsistent - really needs to stick to His/Her decisions.

Every Presidential candidate is going to say they are an extremely devout Christian. Because church and state are separate. Which is also why they have "In God we Trust" on their currency, no doubt.

Watching the soap opera which is American politics makes me realise how lucky we are in Britain. Our politicians are certainly not perfect but compared to what is on offer in the USA they are saints. How can it be acceptable to be able to buy your way to a Presidency. Any country that will not appreciate the simple truth that their gun culture costs more lives per annum than terrorism and still do nothing about controlling it deserve everything they get.
