I suspect he will be more sensible than his outlandish vote getting comments indicate if heaven forbid he becomes Mr President as he will be surrounded by controlling advisers and will have the usual battles with both houses on legislation. I hope so anyway!

I saw the Bear Grylls programme with Obama and it was more enlightening than many a political show. Obama said that you'd think that being President allowed him freedom to act but he said he was basically gagged. A President Trump (although highly unlikely, which means the first black president will be followed by the first female) would have to conform a hell of a lot more than he'd like.

It's amazing that a man with absolutely no record of any kind of public office could become the singularly most influential man in the world. As a staunch anti-royalist myself, these are the kind of things that would make me back a hereditary head of state!

You'd like to think that Hilary would get in, but you can almost predict that she will get trumped (Embarrassed) in the last couple of weeks when another Clinton scandal 'suddenly' emerges.

It appears the majority of Mexican immigrants in America want to keep the other Mexicans out.
It's a pretty messed up world we live in.

I suppose even if you're an immigrant you can still be anti-immigrant. Look at Australia. Maybe it's a feeling of wanting something you - or recent ancestors - have fought hard to achieve preserved in value? Or just standard human hypocrisy?

Trump as president is genuinely scary some of the things he has said. He's clearly dumbing down his rhetoric when on tour but the sad thing is, it's working. I guess he has fascinated the world and a lot of journalists are making an easy living as a result.

I'm thinking of Futurama where the politics of the 30th century is two genetic clones of each other, Jack Johnson and John Jackson and then Richard Nixon's head on the robot killing-machine Destructor comes along.... Nixon's back, baby!

Bets Trump will end up being impeached?

He has chosen his target audience well and his wealth means that he isn't scared by who he offends in getting across his message, albeit a rather perverse and dangerous one imo. You see something similar here in this country with groups like the BNP, but on a far smaller scale, where certain inflammatory rhetoric has been used to attract a certain demographic to their banner, feeding them the lie that all of society's ills are because of the establishment/certain groups and they are the panacea to that. They ignore world economics and the actual politics which genuinely matter

I doubt and hope hes not as extreme as he sometimes portrays himself. Hes probably just appeasing the madcap tea party mob to win the GOP race, then may move to the centre. Hes not looking to cut social security for starters. Cruz is far further right, whereas trump has always been a closet new York democrat.I think everyone is staggered, fascinated and probably horrified too with the whole Trump rise to power. Hes a master self publicist, the ultimate showman, a guilty pleasure, the don king of business. He's seen as outspoken anti establishment by those who like him, but a little poetic with facts and figures, what the American call a little "truthy." I have always loved the apprentice , for my money, the best reality tv show of all time. But why would a man who appears to have everything get into the grimy underworld of politics? Is it simple deluded narcissism or does he genuinely think America needs him to turn it around?

Besides all that I don't think he will beat Hillary. She may be as un-charismatic as a damp dish cloth, she may be reading every word from pre-written auto cues....but she has all the pieces in place. Bill will pull the strings, Obama will give his grudging backing, she has the super delegates and corporations pulling all her strings. Yet she has somehow hoodwinked the African americans  and women into thinking she will do more for them than Bernie sanders? Based on what? shes another corporate lackey...Bernie would do more for them as he could for the lower to middle classes imo, he is my favourite from afar, but the fix is in. He wouldn't win even if he got 60% of the national vote. the democratic structure with super delegates stinks.
Trump isn't nailed on yet, ted cruz is even further right and he wont return to the centre, so trump may actually be less extreme. The whole gun issue is insane. once you have more guns than people then everyone wants more guns to defend themselves? its a downward spiral into hell. Be nice to hear more on policies and manifestos now, rather than the size of trumps hands and his yoga breathing?

.

Roy, that seems like a pretty good summary of where we're at - at the moment.

He reminds me of the character Greg Stillson from Stephen King's The Dead Zone. For those who don't know the story, Christopher Walken in the film, has a strange power that when he shakes people's hands he sees visions of their futures. Greg Stillson played by Martin Sheen is a candidate running for Senator (in a not too dissimilar fashion to Trump's campaign). Walken shakes Stillson's hand and sees him in the future as a lunatic American President pressing the button and launching a nuclear missile attack.

Thankfully in the film, Walken changes the future.

And then to add to the potential nightmare can you imagine Trump on one side with Putin on the other?

Hope we win the European Cup soon. Wink Shocked Cry

Epic book, epic movie. They've made a tv series of of it now.

Michael Dobbs, author of House of Cards (US & UK version) said that if he'd written a character like Trump, people would have thought him too OTT to be believable.

He refuses to publish his tax return which leads people to suspect there's an issue. One commentator said its because they'll show he's not as rich as he claims. His income boast is before any outgoings including staff salaries, tax and other company outgoings.

All the nonsense aside, I simply cannot believe he's as stupid as he looks or acts. Surely to God not! Doesn't stop him being an appalling and brash human being.

And nearer home, according to a recent 'Private Eye' story, Gideon Osborne pulled off a cunning plan which resulted in his family company paying a lot less tax!

The USA constitution had - originally for good reasons - a lot of 'checks and balances' built in. Unfortunately, these days the result is that it makes the president effectively powerless in many areas outside foreign policy (where, by the way, Obama's agreement to the use of drone strikes is a pretty controversial issue). Fair play, though - for all its imperfections, Obama did manage to improve health care for many citizens (Obamacare), where Hilary C failed during the last Clinton administration. It was only by making concessions (horse trading) that Obama managed to get Congress to agree to even this watered down American version of the much derided 'socialist medicine' that we suffer in this country!

The American public just doesn't like Clinton. No one reason, they just don't. I think Sanders knows it and with his campaigns deep pockets he's going to stick around. He's the best hope for a credible President.

The lunacy of protesting at Trump rallies has only served to galvanise support for him. I'd like to think common sense will prevail but when you see where he is winning hands down you really wouldn't have though that was his key demographic. That's the worry.

Arizona will be the best yardstick yet.

I imagine the Republican Party are gutted about Rubio, albeit how much was done to support him? But if the Republicans do their utmost to unseat Trump, but he does get the nomination will middle of the road Republicans vote for him?

I think that's my concern, as at now they are.

He's picking up super delegates by the boat load too ( although they are pledges not votes per se of course)... Clinton too.

The best bet is that he will implode by making one or a string of silly own goals...and I also still have the feeling that a tangible percentage of his vote is based on ( at best ) flakey and shallow logic and when the chips are down he will be
Royally Kinnock'd.

I thought Rubio had something about him, guess his time will come.

Rubio was definitely the thinking person's candidate.

That's what mainstream neo-cons are afraid of - that they will not be able to control him, that he will un-do much of what they have spent so much time and effort setting up to control the world as they want to.
Right wing Americans don't care how stupid their presidents are - just look at Reagan who could barely read an auto-cue or answer simple questions, and fell asleep during vital meetings. So long as he would sign the documents they put in front of him they were happy. The last thing they want is someone who may not sign the documents and can justify this with popular support.

Trump is way smarter than regan, hes using the fact hes self financing his campaign as a massive tool in proving hes not a corporate lackey. Hes even using the fact his opponents are spending tens of millions on negative adverts as a  negative against them. There's  a surreal clip today where trump is celebrating in the trump ballroom about trumps latest victory, talking about presenting a golf trophy to adam scott at the Donald trump golf tournament, everythings going great he says, then a a dreadful anti trump advert comes on the tv, its a disaster.....his sons behind him all laughing their heads off,...surreal.

Rubio apparently thought that God wanted him to be president.  Looks like God is becoming more and more inconsistent - really needs to stick to His/Her decisions.

Every Presidential candidate is going to say they are an extremely devout Christian. Because church and state are separate. Which is also why they have "In God we Trust" on their currency, no doubt.

Watching the soap opera which is American politics makes me realise how lucky we are in Britain. Our politicians are certainly not perfect but compared to what is on offer in the USA they are saints. How can it be acceptable to be able to buy your way to a Presidency. Any country that will not appreciate the simple truth that their gun culture costs more lives per annum than terrorism and still do nothing about controlling it deserve everything they get.
