Labour signed a contract with gp's in 2004 that allowed 90% of gp's to opt out of out of hours and weekend work in return for a 6% pay cut
that in turn has lead to an enormous surge in patients going to hospital instead The BMA say its wrong to scapegoat gp surgeries and its all down to shortage of funding the tories say the gp surgeries are breaking this contract as theyre not staying open up to 8pm and weekends Corbyn is offended the tories have gone after doctors etc what do you lot reckon? |

My daughter is a GP living in Sussex. She works a couple of days a week in a surgery, a couple of afternoon/evenings in an A & E unit (as a GP) and the fifth day she does as a locum in various other GP surgeries. She also does some "out of hours" work which consists mainly of being driven around from house to house by a 2 metre tall "minder".
Some facts: 1. There aren't enough GPs, compounded by a high percentage being female and taking maternity leave, wishing to work part time etc...That's not enough to staff GP surgerys 9-5 monday to friday, not the hours being talked about by the PM 2. GPs take 3 years to train from the end of their F2 year which is itself seven years after they enter university so you can't just conjour them up in six months. 3. If you have a surgery open, you have to have receptionists etc there as well. And security of one form or other- things have deteriorated a bit since Dr Findley's Casebook. 4. The trial last year established that there was a certain interest in going to a GPs surgery on a saturday morning which grew less as the weekend progressed. On sunday afternoon there was virtually no interest. You do other things on a sunday afternoon. The solution is to have GPs in A&E units. The Trust my daughter works in is currently expanding the GP hours in the A&E units. Patients already go to A&E units even when the local GP surgeries are open so one is not swimming against the tide and GPs are trained to see six patients an hour in complete contrast to A&E doctors who "take as long as it takes". Hence the queues in A &E. Its a win/win solution with GP patients who need immediate hospital admission already in the hospital. So no Mrs May is wrong. And the first two facts above mean that this a battle she can't win. |

What about.? GPs or Corbyn? Anne and I are both waiting for urgent heart surgery, it's gone past politics, it's now a case of money and what it should be spent on. GPs are the first step to getting life saving surgery, Corbyn is just a load of crap. |

Thanks Steve.
Yesterday we had a copy of the letter my cardiologist sent to one of the heart surgeons at Morriston. There is a horrendous waiting list for heart surgery and any of the valves have a finite life once they go wrong, unless repaired or replaced. Research is finding new and better ways but unfortunately there are not the surgical teams available everywhere to carry them out. Or the number of beds available for the surgery to be done. Anne has a different cardiologist to me and is a couple of months behind me. Let's hope that 2017 is better for us than 2016 was. |

It seems so hard to get simple scans, which in turn creates massive bed blocking and in effect wastes months worths of medication. I say invest in the front end get people scanned more easily, this saves money on the back end and bed blocking and saves LIVES

Yes, if we can build Nuclear submarines and operate them, building and using scanners should be easy, it's just a matter of the ridiculous priorities that our government has.

Healthcare is the last issue we should be worried about ..Know that we have the lunatics in the asylum running the world all i can see is war war and more war. Trump is a businessman who is in it for self gain . May is an opportunist she said nothing during the Brexit vote but sat quietly on the remain side , but was quick enough to jump sides when the result came in . Putin wants the USSR back and is intent on it happening . China now produces over 90% of the worlds electronic deviceswhich would be required for weapons and communications systems and europe is uncertain what the future holds with americas lack of interest in nato . The next step in europe will be wars between nations as history has shown.
There are a lot of old established denominations there that have worked for all for over 40 years and now they are being undermined by the very countries that established them . its not a nice thought but i think the chances of your children / grandchildren fighting and dying in a war are higher now than they have been in years ...a sobering thought

These days we only go to war on the coat-tails of our masters , the exceptional, indispensable USA who behave as if they have the right to regime-change any government who will not bow down to them. The reason why Russia and Trump are being demonised now is that after the disaster that was regime change in Libya, Russia decided that it would not let the same happen in Syria and seriously started attacking the Jihadi terrorists. If Trump is allowed to make peace with Russia and not partake in more foreign adventures then the world will be a safer place. And anyway who the hell needs a hugely expensive replacement for Trident - we are a second division military power who will have this little island vaporised in retaliation if ever we decided to use it. Scrap this lunacy and save our real jewel the National Health Service.
