Yes you can see a Sexton or someone reacting and kicking over the blitz can't you but we just kept on going through the passing motions slavishly. We need to mix it up more especially as opposition coaches are monitoring our every move now.

The thing with the box kick is that a good one allows your players running up to jump and compete for the ball. Steff for one (rightly!) doesn't do that generally/anymore and there seems to be a tactic with Wales (and Scarlets) that if we do a box kick to wait for the player to land and then tackle him. Now that's fine on one level but against a well organised defence with players with good upper body strength (like England) all it tends to do is give the ball to the opposition about 20 metres up field. So even when Gareth did a good one England still ended up with the ball and under little pressure. So unless the ball is very wet our best option (Wales and Scarlets) is to keep ball in hand rather than box kick. That does not include long kicks from Scrum Half from base of ruck/scrum on own line of course.

So if it is dry in Dublin I expect to see very few box kicks (especially as Ireland are masters at dealing with them).

But yes our half backs need to get better at them for days like the home Euro match against Bath - when you hope an instant tackle when they hit the ground plus a slippy ball means a knock-on.

We don't do box kicking well,  but we don't even try those little chips over the blitz, which would stop and turn the defenders, and with the bounce of a rugby ball as it is, gives us a better than 50/50 chance of winning it back (we are motoring forward but the opposition has to turn and start again before competing for it). The grubber kick has the same effect but is more risky as it can be caught by an alert defender before it passes the blitz line. Foxy is one of the better exponents, although Steff has made and scored some important tries using it, but in the last international he was more or less cornered whenever he had the ball and it was too risky. Basically the chip is in the hands of the 9,10 or 12 before the defensive line closes us down. Perhaps we should invite Barry John to give a coaching session before the next match.

stephen jones himself was a poor box kicker it was one of his very few weaknesses, many welsh backs are weak in this area

Wales have no injury concerns & have a fully fit squad to choose from. North, Biggar, L.Williams, Halfpenny & Faletau all in contention to play.

I don't think Biggar & Faletau will be risked. I could possibly see Biggar on the bench.

Falatau is a world class player and is probably good enough to step straight in although id rather see him get a run out for bath after so long out. Bigger on the other hand will struggle in that intensity as he cannot be match fit, and would take at least 20/30 mins to tune in. Id bring halfpenny back in and have north starting with liam on the bench. Its great to see some options in the back 3 and will surely push everyone as nobody is safe of their position in the team.

Gatland played safe and picked Biggar, predictable and short sighted

Cais arall Iwerddon.

22-13.

Yup, agree. Not competing well at the breakdown. Too dependant on going for the rip or jackal but Ireland packing in the numbers to clear out. We have to change and get more numbers in over the ball to compete.
