We should be higher as our average this season is over 10k.

But we are the sort of team that attracts supports from way out of our own boundaries too.

So yes, punching well above our weight. yet we are still a sleeping giant imo. Loads of room for growth.

Ah but we're terrible cheats. We bus in loads from all over Wales and even get some fanatics coming in from other less well off nations (in rugby terms) like -what's the name of that excuse for a country on the other side of the Severn crossings?

Wow! Have you seen how much data they have on that site? Astonishing. Really well presented too.

Population analysis is a bit basic, only factors in the immediate urban centre, not surrounding towns, but even so(!)

Not impressive reading for Dragons Blues or Ospreys. Let's just say 'great potential for improvement.

The data is well off the mark. limerick has a population close to 200k not 90k, which brings their averages to below 8%. But our stats look good reading

I think the scarlets as a region does well compared to the population of llanelli. But I would say the support from the people of llanelli itself is quite poor in regards to attendances.

When we were in Stradey they gave us the statistic that 60% of our support came from ,outside the town and the rest from the town. It was given in a match programme I have somewhere

It's an interesting piece of work, but certainly questions can be asked abut the basis of calculation, as you say. Since the Irish teams are provinces, should they not include the provincial population - and, anyway, don't Munster play some games in Cork - or has that stopped? It could be argued that the Scarlets should include the populations of the old Dyfed, Gwynedd, Clwyd and maybe a lot of Powys, though realistically only a very few make the long trek from north Wales.

In the other sense, Saracens are competing with Harlequins for support in London, so perhaps their 'catchment population' should be halved.

In truth, it's more of a conversation piece than serious research, but it does suggest (as others say) that the Scarlets do pretty well in drawing out a good proportion of 'local-ish' support - as they deserve to do ATM with their style of play and their excellent win/loss record at home.

(One question: do Bordeaux REALLY average 20k+ for home games? How do they do that? It didn't use to be a rugby hothouse.)

That’d be pretty interesting. I would be willing to bet, that a good 40-50% if not more l, are from outside of th towns boundary.

V interesting reading! The Sarries and Quins stats are way off though, as the Sarries catchment population is only really North London and a bit of Herts and really the Quins are just Richmond/South West London so they come off looking far worse than they actually do. The Sarries have great support and I don’t think their stadium accommodates more than about 10,000 normally. Great to see the Llanelli stats though; it definitely puts it into perspective.

Saracens stadium I believe currently only holds 10,000 hence the plans for a new stand. The rugby day experience in France is on a different level to most in the UK. They tend to be huge family occasions. Our day out in Clermont was something else with home supporters actually going out of their way to make us feel welcome and my wife & I even had a tour of the ground provided by one of the Clermont supporters club patrons who happened to see us wandering around the concourse looking for our seats.

Back to the statistics - Carms., Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire can accurately be described as Rugby heartland with a very honourable mention to our many friends in North Wales. We continue to punch way above our weight & one of WP's great achievements has been to harness this passion for the game and the way it should be played so that it becomes ingrained throughout the playing & management squads. We have that identity which many crave. History, of course, plays a huge part and here again how fortunate we are - the Scarlets brand is indeed recognised Worldwide in Rugby circles thanks to the fantastic achievements of past players & coaches.

To hear Grav talk about his beloved Scarlets to listening to Gareth challenge his players to reading about Carwyn and his wonderfully simple philosophy about how the game should be played : we are indeed blessed.

And the rest id say.

Llanelli RFC was always a region, it was the biggest and best club in West Wales therefore attracted support from all over.

Yes historically Llanelli/Scarlets have always been the main club in West Wales and as such has always been a "regional"representative before the creation of the current regions and great to see this continuing and growing after our recent successes with the style of play and the passion of the supporters.

Aber, yes, Bordeaux do average that many each match. A season or so ago, I think it was more like 30k watching. This year, they’ve not been anywhere near as competitive since Ibañez was at his most effective as coach.

When they moved from Bègles to the south of the city with a 15K capacity to Chaban Delmas, their crowds shot up. Chaban Delmas came available when Bordeaux Football left for the MatMut stadium, which gets used for some of Bordeaux rugby’s matches as well.

The tram system has helped those attending but not if they’re driving cars so much.

Remember what Mark Twain said, "There are three kinds of liesliesdamned lies, and statistics."

Great reading as set out, but totally unfair, as an example the London clubs, how many are they 3, and technically they draw their support from the same pool.

I do feel our average is good, but really our captive support region is more than stated, BUT the same applies to all the Pro14 clubs, and to a lesser extent the English clubs.

Great reading but I feel one must take with a pinch of salt, how much that pinch is up to the individual.
Be careful when you pick up the stick.........IT MAY BE THE WRONG END!!!!!!!!!!
