Thought Helps has looked pretty good on his few appearances. Tom Price is one I am expecting to kick on next season with a good pre-season. We are going to have to find another decent tight head soon as I can't see Werne being around for many more seasons. He has been an excellent signing - very durable I don't recall him missing a game due to injury.
Dan Davis will put some pressure on in the back row but we seem well blessed in that area.

Werner Kruger is 33... Filise is around 41 (if you believe him)... so Werner must have a good 8 seasons left! Seriously, though - props seem able to go on until a decent age, so long as they steer clear of injuries... their game is obviously less dependent on being able to run around very fast, which is something that becomes harder after 30 or so. Even Usain Bolt retired around his 31st birthday! (I know there are exceptions, but there are more mid-30s props out there than sprinters...) We just need to hope our props steer clear of injuries - remember a few seasons ago when Gardiner (something like 4th choice at TH prop) had to play v Tigers in the European Cup? Any team can be victim of a run of bad luck like that - Racing were down to their third choice 10 after a few minutes on Sat., and their reserve 9 started with Machenaud out. It's tough luck, but that's rugby. |

Helps certainly looks far better this season than he ever has before. He was very good when he came off the bench early vs Edinburgh away.
We seem well stocked at lock, and even both sets of props. Macleod, Boyde and Elias will hopefully really kick on next season and be our James Ryan etc. I hope that in a year or so Elias will push Ken. But Ken at the moment is playing the best rugby of his career. I for one think that Cummins will be a fantastic player, similar to Hadleigh, not seem him do many mistakes and the way he knows when to offload is great.

Cummings seems to be settling in nicely, getting more and more aggresive in each game. Carries far more than his first couple of games. Really looking forward to seeing the next phase of our developing pack.

That's setting the bar pretty high - maybe unrealistically so! Still, let's hope the boys have the ambition to emulate Ryan, and become fixtures in the Wales squad... of the three, I think Elias is well on the way... I thought a while back that he'd overtake Ken, but Ken has upped his game and Elias needs to work on his lineout throws. I do think he'll get there, sometime, as Ken grows older and Elias gains experience. I have great hopes for Macleod, who seems to have the size and athleticism to go all the way, if his attitude stays good, he continues to learn, and is lucky with injuries. Boyde, being a bit smaller and (probably) having to compensate with brain for a comparative lack of brawn and out-and-out pace, will have a harder job to make an impression, IMO - but he should at the very least be good enough to be a regular member of the Scarlets match-day 23. We'll see - and I wish him and the others all the best for their careers. I have yet to see Helps, so it's good to hear that he's making progress. Cummins has made a lot of that since arriving, and already looks a canny signing. More of the same next season, please!

Tom Price was excellent coming back at Llanelli RFC in our last couple of games. Made a big difference having him in the pack. Hope he stays injury free now and kicks on.

I see no reason why Elias can't become the standout Welsh hooker in a season or two. He's more physical than Ken already, but as you say his throwing needs some work. In my opinion he should concentrate on what makes him good, being a big physical hooker similar to Marx, no not Karl unfortunately! Macleod has all it takes, and has the top end speed that perhaps his counterparts in the Welsh squad do not. His main competition is Elis Jenkins who I think is possibly the outstanding forward in the Welsh game of late. Rivalled only by Rob. On that note, I have noticed that we have not been great in the breakdown since the end of the Six nations. Has anyone else? Cubby has been less than impressive in that department, and Beirne has slowed down in that area. Though both excellent elsewhere. Is this an interpretation issue, players getting tired or are they being targeted by the cleaners? Thoughts?

the breakdown is a team game the man clearing out makes the next guy look good....Cubby has taken a while after an extensive injury to come back to form...Ball hits rucks hard weve missed him wyn jones absent has also been a crucial absence. Barclay for all his magnificence is still not a specialist 8. The new 8 may add a different dimension too as may the new lock.

Ever since that Munster away game we haven't been getting the turnovers, basically to counter our turnover opportunities they are commiting more to the ruck also the dark arts help depending on the ref, such as the Glasgow game that they were just laying all over us and the ball just to stop us getting those turnovers that enable us to score some sexy tries. We need someone to be there early and clear out hard to give us a chance but really it's a tough one to get away from. |

The irish teams tend to hold on to players at rucks for that crucial extra seconds 6to take your men out of the game, weak refs turn a blind eye...We need to pre plan for this, we need counter it, bring it to the refs attention and react when its happenning not complain after the event
