Incredulously, no mention of Iribaren in there. It obviously didn’t suit the narrative. Only in the player ratings did he feature with 3 out of 10 being lucky not to have been substituted earlier than half time.

If they wanted to go for the 7 points with a driving lineout maul as opposed to the 3 points, I found it slightly odd they didn't opt for the scrum 5m out and Exeter down a tight head. Exeter would have had to bring on a replacement TH at the expense of another player - a back coming off would have left RAcing with a 1-man advantage in the backs for the last 10 minutes while a back rower sacrificed would have left the 8-man Racing pack scrummaging against a 7-man Exeter pack. Some odd calls were made by Racing during the last 10 minutes. Also thought Slade was lucky not to cop 10 minutes in the bin for his high tackle from behind which caught the Racing player (Imhoff?) square on the chops. As the SHC jackle goes... better not go too in-depth on how Owens found it to be a legal jackle!!

I thought SHC could've been called for in the side. Slade made contact with shoulder first to prevent a yellow - very close. Racing's mistakes were terrible, often from halfback, yet they really should have won in the last ten but were lacking in the last six inches. I also didn't see much passion from them, appealing ref's decisions or frustration at the end. No one really stepped up and said "we are winning this one boys".
Exeter: limited, but effective. Low error count good fitness and every player played their part and wanted the win. Entertaining final all things considered. Racing really can score from anywhere (or concede from anywhere). Zebo had a hell of a game.

As Doc says, they lacked the necessary mentality to win.

Nigel said today On SM that SHC was a legal challenge as they were on the try line and you can approach on the side in such circumstances- just saying 🤔

Ah the offside line was the goalline. Yes, that makes sense. Have to see it again for SHC's exact position but I understand now.

It’s certainly a borderline decision so not a shocker either way. Personally believe that all Racing players go straight off feet so therefore is still a tackle nor a ruck and then SHC just about comes in from the back. However could easily understand how some would think that it is in from the side as it’s certainly a 50-50 decision.

Thinking more about it, that was an excellent game for the neutral and far better than many defence-dominated cagey affairs which tend to dominate top level rugby. Different day (different halfbacks) could have been 60-10 to Racing. Sure, Exeter are limited but they were still attacking and aimed to score tries so fair play to them. Russell's high risk stuff gave some awesome moments and Zebo was dynamite plus most of the Racing backs always looked on the verge of a break. Having that contrast of two very different attacking styles generated a really good watch. Lots of interesting mini-battles all over the pitch: lineout (Racing did steal a lot from Exeter's most potent weapon), scrum, breakdown as ever, contrasting halfback styles, a set of electric (and massive) outer backs versus a decent defensive group plus then the coaching and decision making - think we know Exeter won that part. Shame Racing didn't seem completely up for it, they were very French but maybe this is part of the fun as well? I still am not sure the huge numbers of substitutions is the right thing for the game but overall I really enjoyed it.

Some ( including me now and then!) just ask for the impossible ie perfection . All pro refs are observed by ARs and TMO during a game and there are debrief sessions back at the office on the Monday etc .. with further analysis. We had a Crys16 meet the refs night a few years back and it was very interesting and informative. I wish all supporters could have something like this to educate and inform ( compulsory would help 😂)

All I can say about Nige's matches is that they usually end up being entertaining. Being a professional referee in such high profile games is no easy task and we should celebrate his achievements. He is after all one of us.

I've always been puzzled at the level of ridicule, and sometimes vitriol, that's aimed at Nigel Owens.
He's one of a very small/elite group of Welsh citizens who has reached the very top of their profession. The recurring narrative is actually to forensically monitor his performance to find errors. Not much of a life that tbh. He is not immune to making mistakes. |
