Half backs were always going to be an issue with Webb and Biggar leaving but it is a big chance for Sam Davies but Webb is a massive loss for them. Hook is a decent option as well and has vast experience for the league plus is a very solid goalkicker. Decent seconds but not a huge amount to fear from their pack and, as you say, will be some untested players in the front line soon enough.

For the Blues to concede 3 forward oriented tries in 27 minutes against a Leinster team without the Irish front 5 will be huge cause for concern & will lead to them being targeted there in the next few games. It was good to see Jason Harries play so well. He is a handful & brings into question why he & SHC were allowed to leave Edinburgh.

The blues were pretty much at full strength up front so they will be quite concerned. The Ospreys are a quite short of depth, they will struggle during the international windows, as the marquee players they have brought in (Scott and GN, plus Aled) will be away during those periods and the players let don’t have the same abilities. I also have concerns about their pack, they haven’t really strengthened and in fact have lost Arhip and Thornton to the blues

Blues could not handle Leinster seconds on a dry day on the plastic pitch. Does no augur well for a wet muddy surface in the November-March period. Ospreys will be about a 10 win team I would guess

Exeter 40 - 6 Leicester Tigers. Bit of a tonking yesterday for one of our European opponents. Racing 92 play Clermont this afternoon in Paris.

Final score from Paris:
Racing92 17 - 40 Clermont Auvergne. A very heavy home defeat for our first opponents in Europe this season.

Cheetahs were oddly not too bad v Munster despite the 38-0 score.
But they really are ‘obviously’ so young and inexperienced across the park, and so make a raft of basic errors, that Munster’s older/wiser heads could easily take advantage of. Edited by Wil Chips - 02 September 2018 at 8:08pm |

I know Cheetahs are still in the Currie Cup this year - so are they trying to stretch one squad across two competitions like last season or have they got a dedicated Pro 14 squad which has their best players in it? |

You are right, they have also lost a couple of their best players to the national squad ( Mapimpi the winger for example..real handful).
They seem to split resources between Currie cup and Pro 14 on paper, but for sure the media and fans see the Currie Cup as the priority. They are indeed really stretched right now. |

Good read on Leicester’s toothless attack vs Exeter here https://www.rugbypass.com/news/toothless-tigers-worrying-aspects-leicesters-attack
While the article is quite anti Matt O’Connor I must admit I don’t see the fuss either. Also has to be tempered by the fact it was the first game of the season and they were playing the superb Exeter, but bodes well for us in Europe. |
