RACING 92

Another sign of things to come? Racing & Springbok back Patrick Lambie retires. Unhappy

Racing 92 fly-half Pat Lambie has retired from rugby because of "persistent post-concussion symptoms".

The South Africa international, 28, said he had contemplated retiring even before arriving at the French side. He had been expected to return this month but said he decided to end his career because of the "persistent post-concussion symptoms".

"I have not been able to do any weight sessions in the last two and a half months because I had a terrible headache," he said. "I followed the advice of two neurologists. They advised me to stop rugby."

Lambie, who also played at full-back, scored 153 points in 56 Test appearances for the Springboks between 2010 and 2016 and joined Racing in September 2017.

I would like to congratulate Leinster, Munster, Ulster, Glasgow and Edinburgh on all reaching the knockout stages in this seasons European Champions cup. This is a great endorsement for the pro14. Yet again only 1 team from the English Premiership made it, and only 2 teams from the French championship. Not a great return for all the money spent by teams in those leagues.
Ulster deserve great credit for their achievement, when the draw was made, I and many others thought that they would be the weakest of the teams in our pool, as they had been in decline, had off field issues with players who have since left the club, they even had issues with their coaching setup. To win home and away against us and Leicester and beat Racing Metro at home is a great achievement.

For those of you who are unaware of who he is, he's the ginger South African Prop who has played 36 times for his country.
He’s a top player and a huge asset for his employers. Hope he deploys the pay wisely.

It certainly is and they are a team on the up no doubt. I still believe that if even our current crop of forwards had found the intensity shown against Leicester & Racing we would have beaten Ulster in both games. They have done well to reach the last 8 but thats the end of the journey I think. Only Munster of the away quarter finalists have a real chance of getting through in my opinion. It will be very interesting to see how the favourites Leinster cope with having to play their final two games probably away from Dublin. Saracens and Leinster for me to take the field in Newcastle in May.

There salaries keep on reminding us of our financial limitations and for realism when looking at who we can contract as players and what we can achieve as a Region . And it’s not going to get any better. That’s what made our achievements in last 3 years so good.

Indeed, massive statement of intent & quite a wage packet too. I would think he would count as one of their marquee signings outside of the salary cap.

By way of contrast with what was on offer in Dublin I watched the Glasgow Ospreys game afterwards. What a pigs ear of a game. Both sides were clueless.

How many marquee players can they have? They seem to have quite a few already.

NIgel awarded Ulster a last minute penalty try so it ended 17 all in Belfast. Good result for us as neither pull away from us.

Edinburgh win. They look the real deal and probably now as good as Glasgow.
Loads of quality Saffas on the field tonight representing both sides in European rugby 🙄
Keep the faith

The current level of the Salary Cap for 2017-18 is £7m, plus two Excluded Players whose salaries sit outside the cap, enabling clubs to recruit and retain world class talent.

But as you say, given the names in their squad, it could be 2 of many!!

I think Sale have operated well below the salary cap for some time now & have had recent investment to allow such salaries.
