Gethin Jenkins has announced that this Sunday's Cardiff Blues game against Zebre will be his last.

After 129 Wales caps, 3 Grand Slams, 5 appearances for the B&I Lions, 2 Challenge Cup winner medals with Cardiff and a Champions Cup trophy with Toulon in his only season away from Cardiff, it's the end of a stellar career.

His chronic knee problem is just too painful to continue, but he wanted one more run-out with his team before starting a coaching role with the Cardiff Blues academy.

Rest well, Melon. ClapClapClap

A truly great servant to Welsh rugby. I predict a stellar coaching career for one of the game's  perfectionists. He reminds me very much of Dean Richards - been there done it and doesn't suffer fools gladly. Come to think of it what odds on Melon being in the Welsh coaching set up by the 2023 World Cup alongside Stevo?

All great things come to an end and he has been truly great
Not a lot more he could have achieved other than to win a world cup
3 slams, heineken cup, 2 challenge cups, record welsh caps of all time, 3 lions tours
Just an awesome player

The good news is that he goes straight back into coaching at the blues academy. That's 1 good thing about the regional set up, the pathway for ex players to become coaches is far clearer than previously. Hence we have seen a load of welsh stars successfully join the coaching ranks.

A fantastic player who really changed prop play with his game all around the park. Wales legend.

Yes, a great moment for a great player!

One thing that made him stand out was his incredible engine - I read an article once where a Wales international back (forget who) was on a training run with the team (it may have been at a lower level when they were juniors, not Wales), and after running a couple of miles, he was getting a bit puffed - slowing up a little, he heard these heavy footsteps behind him and was amazed to see this big fat lad catching up - it was Melon. A huge player for Wales in a great era.
