A very disturbing article in the BBC Sport section online this morning.

Serious allegations of not repaying large sums of money borrowed from women he befriended online to fuel a 'gambling addiction'.
Whether or not this is true, gambling habits among sportsmen (and some punters!) are a serious issue, and this would tarnish Regan's outstanding playing record.

Heard this for a while from friends who play for local rugby clubs.
Heard also hes taken money from team mates and not paid back, not a very well liked man

The gambling problem is true. I have a mutual friend and spent a good bit of time with Regan during his second spell with the team. He's hell of a nice bloke, and was very open and honest about the gambling, and the effect it's had on what should have been a great life traveling the world playing rugby. I suspect he's still got an issue with it, and moving on every time it catches up with him. Sadly it means he's unlikely to get help until he stops running from it.

It won’t tarnish my opinion of him in the slightest.
An excellent player, and I have nothing but sympathy for anyone struggling with a serious addiction, as he clearly is. |

Same here. Written with a heavy heart, because he was a phenomenon during his first stint, and although he'd lost some of his pace the second time around, the skills were as good as ever, and became a provider for so many great scores.

If this story is accurate and who knows with the news these days, but to hide behind this as a so called addiction is a total cop out. Goodness knows what turmoil this has caused his friends and girlfriends who lent him this hard-earned money, in good faith to try to help him. This is some of the confused moral thinking in this country now where it appears in some situations the culprits get more help , attention, sympathy and government spending per head , than their victims.

He had a few'outstanding' payments to make at the casino in Swansea too, which limited his gambling somewhat.

We can hugely respect the rugby player but this off field stuff is , if true, his shame. I am sorry for the poor people that allegedly he deceived and if true has simply stolen from. What a mess for everyone. Let’s wait to see what happens before judgement This could end up in prison. Tragic stuff ☹️

People whose families have a history of mental illness or addiction are more at risk of developing these conditions themselves, just like cancer. Addicts brains are wired fundamentally differently to others, and I quote psychologytoday.com “According to many... once the addiction is triggered, there is no way to undo the pathways—the proverbial cucumber turning to a pickle.” I also want to make it clear I do not condone any of Regan’s behaviours, I simply feel pity for him, and for anyone else for whom it’s not as simple as just quitting the bottle/drugs/gambling etc. |

Horrible affliction.
So often it’s the ‘creatives’ of the world that are burdened with these demons. It will always divide opinion. Unfortunately I suspect the article could lead to other similar reveals. |

Regan should be comfortable now with all the money he earned, spending time with family reflecting on a magnificent playing career. Instead he's wandering around the planet alone alienating all who love him and stretching friendships to breaking point and beyond. His victims have been hurt financially and emotionally but of course Regan is also a victim. Its a story that continues on a downward spiral, I just pray that he finds something in himself to start to rebuild his life before its too late. I just hope that there's someone out there who can help him and that Regan realises that he needs help.
