Not a lot in it, but Thomas will be 27 by the end of the season. Only 2 years younger than Cubby, but appears to be less injury prone. Would be a very good signing. He wasn't getting game time whilst at Cardiff, and at the time we were playing McCusker as we didn't have an out and out 7. Couldn't understand why didn't sign him all those years ago.

He’s 44 from 44 in terms of tackles and a menace over the ball.

Wasps get beaten as their front 5 is inadequate...Young, though an excellent player, would not improve that aspect for the Scarlets.
In planning for next year, I think we need to assume Ball will not be a factor, so we need some size in the pack, and depth in the back row. I would sign him as I don't see him in the Wales set up necessarily, which makes me wonder why he would come, as he will earn more in England.

I think if Thomas was playing in Wales he would be an established international by now and if he does come back to Wales, he will have a better chance for Wales. Once he's in, it'll be very hard to get him out. If the guy was English he'd have 60/70 caps by now. It all depends on how much he values having a crack at establishing himself with Wales. By my reckoning if he wants anymore caps he has to come back at the end of this contract. Anybody knows when his contract is up? In terms of his value to us, he would improve us. 100% sure of that, whether that is at 8,6 or 7 who knows, but how often in the last 2/3 seasons have we had a fully fit back row? The majority of the time we have been missing one or more of Cubby, Shingler, Barclay, Blade. If he is available it is an absolute no brainer. I'm also of the opinion unless we can sign a truly international class ball carrying 8 or a cheap prospect then we carry on with what we got. Use Blade, put a huge effort in to developing Josh, wait to see how Carwyn develops and support Cassiem. There is no point in spending good money on muck!

This bloody new system the WRU wants to set up re the players contracts should have been sorted out before end of last season.
It means we can’t sign players with any certainty or resign certain players we should be bidding for Young now so he can play rest of season for us giving us a boost and enhancing the chances of him going to the World Cup. I have seen Wasps live twice this season and in both games he has been the stand out player. |

Young Is a good player and playing a fine rugby at the moment, but I dont know how is comfortable to sign him...he is a Natural 6 and we would like ti adapt him to 8, and other adapted player in a crucial role. Shingler, Thompson, MacLeod and Rawlins are our candidates, with the last one our best talent.
We should concentrate our finance in a Specialist player, In modern rugby switch role like Barclay is really difficoult, he balanced a non-exaggerated muscle mass with a first-order rugby intelligence |

Not the term I would use for professional athletes but I think I get your point. Project Reset is in no way going to solve all our financial issues. You correctly identify that Wasps front 5 is not good enough which makes them similar in many ways to us. Our front row resources are good provided Werner wants another year at least. Even with Jake fully fit we need two quality 2nd rows as an absolute must, followed by a quality 8 and 10. If Jonny leaves then we need an International standard back 3 player. Then and only then can we contemplate the signing of Thomas Young who I agree is a magnificent player. To suggest that he answers our problem at 8 is fanciful in my mind. I certainly could see him playing 7 or even 6 with Cubby at 7 and turnover wise he would be the Barclay replacement in that area.

I agree with what has been said. In order we need;
- Locks x2 (big units who can make hard yards) - #8 (big unit who can make hard yards) - #10 (backup or challenger to Patch) - I am fine with Sam Davies but doubt he will move; Owen Williams is who I would like to see here - Wing if Jonny goes - Adams is obvs choice The one thing I would say, is when we look at a #8, he has to be dynamic i.e. big and hitting the ground as soon as contact is made is no good whatsoever. On that note, but not as a #8 Ken style LOL, I think Samson has made strides this season. He always flopped in contact but now his legs keep pumping. Am I wrong?

If you want to be successful over a season you need two quality players (at least) in each position.
Any chance we have to sign someone of the quality of Thomas Young I think we need to take it. |

With all the debates about big number 8s and international wings, I just think this... If we'd signed Thomas Young last summer (and he'd stayed fit) he'd have played virtually every single game for us this season; the bulk at 7, some at 6 and maybe a couple at 8, including when the internationals were on.
We talk about not adequately replacing the guys who left... and here we have an available Barclay replacement, similar age when joining, similar experience, a similar player, also out in the international cold, and some people are doubting it as a decent signing?!

Thomas Young was under contract last summer. I'm not sure how we could've signed him then.

I certainly don't doubt he is an exceptional player. However we can't sign every exceptional player who fits the return to Wales etc bill. We have to prioritise our spending. My point, which I think is fair & reasonable, is that we are well stocked at 7. Recruitment policy is not made assuming that 7 out of back row squad would be injured at the same time. These are exceptional circumstances. Our priorities lie elsewhere 4,5, 8 & 10. Thomas is many things but he not an International standard No 8.
