Alun Wyn Jones has agreed a contract extension with Ospreys & the WRU until June 2021.
As dual contracts are phased out, an exception has been made to keep the Wales and B&I Lions captain in Wales for two more seasons. If an exception to the rule is going to be made, I guess AWJ is worthy of it. But it is an exception nevertheless, and others can now justifiably test the rules. The framework of player salary bandings is very well intentioned, but not universally workable in the real world - if an exception has to be made at the very top of the structure, it's not working as it should - the result could get very blurred.

I might feel differently if they hadn't have signed Anscombe.

Exactly. No doubt he’s been an exceptional player and keeping him was a massive boost for the Os and Wales, but they clearly couldn’t afford him and Anscombe and they knew that when signed Anscombe. I’m assuming the PRB had to approve this? Must have been an interesting discussion. What’s going to happen when the next high profile player is out of contract?

Not bothered personally. AWJ has earned the right to be paid well to stay in Wales considering all he has done for Welsh Rugby

Yes he does but does that mean that when one of our International players contract comes to an end we can ask the WRU to fund the majority (60%) of it?

Good point but he is a world icon for Welsh Rugby as a leader and warrior. There is a risk of precedent making but I cannot think of anyone who would be his equal as a flag bearer on that world stage ( just my opinion mind)

think its risking a lot with this deal. alun wyn is an icon of welsh rugby. but how much are the wru paying for this? is it coming out of the money that the regions are getting or is it on top of what the ospreys have been given? would be pretty peeved off if I was a blues fan. wru could and should have helped keep anscombe at the blues.
how much actual rugby will alun wyn play for the ospreys over this period? he will be nursed up to the next lions tour. think gatland has a big finger in this

Nothing, they do not exist any more. Regions must fully fund the contracts of Welsh International players when they sign a new contr..... oh wait.

Around £270,000 - 60% of somewhere around £450,000 which is the top of the 'project reset bandings'.
