A shant is a drink. To shant is to drink. “Shant your shant” makes perfect sense, for example. |

The word ‘shant’ is fantastic. I have used it with people even on the other side of the Loughor bridge and been looked at blankly (though in fairness that’s how they normally look isn’t it?)
It truly is Llanelli specific.

It’s not John Smiths Steve. It’s from a small Welsh brewer. Not Hobgoblin Gold but can’t be worse than the current watery shant

I only recognise it as a verb not a noun.

Really? It's a bit like calling somebody shag. On a similar subject, I only found out recently that rissoles are a West Walian thing. Thought it was UK-wide. How they have missed out.

You wonder if it comes from sailing days when we had sailors from Cornwall etc visiting (eg The ex old Cornish Arms in Seaside now known with the less appealing title Bucket and Spade -to me anyway! )and 'sea shanties'/singsongs normally associated with a grog in hand-seems a clear line of thought on its boozing history from the days of the docks.

Having lived in various areas of south east Wales, you won't get a decent rissole outside of the west, but you will find them in some chippy's

When you say west, I guess you’d include Neath Swansea etc? I think even up the valleys they are rissoles. Good thread this. I love shanting, once I did a load on a bus to Leicester - we lost but I got to do more shanting and played 200 a side rugby in the M50 services. Who was there?
