His fitness issues would remain the same, he could play centre no doubt not sure how good he would be though!

I see the problem at centre - Baldwin is going, and to be blunt Fonotia and Asquith these days are hardly top notch, while Knott is not ready yet (no pun intended)
But surely, we don't reckon that Costellow will only be used as back-up to Patch and AOB? Haven't Leicester also used him at centre? The only "downside" is that if he carries on developing at his current rate, he will probably won't be long before he is whisked away to join the Wales 38.
As others have noted, if Tompkins is only available for a one year loan, then the next best solution would be to look for a powerful NWQ centre who can also add to our physicality and carrying ability.
If we are so desperate that we are thinking of temporarily converting back row forwards into centres then Dan Davis would be where I'd start, as he has pace and power in abundance and we have 3 other excellent 7s in Cubby, MacLeod and Jac.

It would have been a stupid signing due to the fact he’s not part of the 38 and it’s only a loan deal
Why would it have been a stupid signing? He’s a squad player at Saracens so probably isn’t on massive money.
If you have two players of equal worth, in similar positions, and one is Team Wales 80% funded and the other is in the matchday squad but not subsidised, you’re paying 5 times the amount of money for the latter (Tompkins like) player.

If you’re only seeing them for about half the season, wouldn’t you prefer to use the money for an all year round player of similar value?

Much as I like Tompkins and hope he comes to us post his anticipated return to Sarries for 2021/22, I’d prefer someone who is around for all year on the basis of money spent.
Ideally we’d have him at the 20% discount, or an international quality NWQ player who’d be available all season, but if neither of those are achievable, picking up Tomkins’ affordable wages for 18 or so matches doesn’t seem too bad to me.

How can you say that about Osian Knott? He as not been given a chance at Senior level. I am hugely disappointed he as not had a game . As everything you need in an inside centre, attack, defence, passing a big boot and time on the ball.

If its on a loan deal then its not smart business. Cardiff are desperate for a centre with Halaholo and Lee-lo injured long term. We ideally need a permanent replacement for Fonotia if he is away. I would say after this weekends showing Tompkins is firmly 3rd choice centre.

Had we loaned him in its 3 centres away with Wales, lets get a non welsh Qualified to see us through the season.

I concur with what my Learned Friend RR says . He is very courageous but he is a small lad and unlike a Scott Gibbs not a Pocket Battleship. He is a 10. We also seem to see the other regions getting a lot of the quality pickings over the last year ( excluding Liam who is just coming home ). Is this the WRU playing a hand? It looks like any shrinking of the regions to 3 is over then ?🤔

Thought both would be back in the summer and ready for next season.

After this weekend I think Tompkins is 1st choice not third.

I agree with Scarletnut that a loan deal doesn't make sense & I also agree with EO that it doesn't make any business sense. Lets invest our money in a big quick Southern Hemisphere 13 who can play on the wing as well. Give Knott games at 12. Forget about Costellow in the centre he is going to be challenging very hard for the starting 10 shirt. If we want to convert any back rower into a centre Ffidel has got it - Dan Davis has played centre for many years with Llandeilo. He is quick, tough and can step ( ask Rob Kierney).

I would have Tompkins for one season regardless.

He would've been great for us at 12, at a time when Parkes looks like he's on the wane.

Parkes & Foxy are very worthy squad members even with their limited availability only so long as they stay within the magic 38. I appreciate that some guys may not be out of contract but we could afford to loose Tom James & Fonotia which would help towards the cost of a top NWQ 13.

Much has been spoken about young Osian Knot but does anyone have any updates on the lad who is injured - Joe Roberts. He looked quite a handful when I saw him last season.

I feel for parkes, he was flogged whilst injured  under gatland and now he is being asked to play like Jamie Roberts despite not physically equipped to do so
Totally agree with reesy on this one He looks battered and knackered, pivac needs to take him out of the firing line this weekend and give him the summer off
