This is actually an unlikely benefit. One of the challenge's faced by countries fighting Ebola, like the DRC, is that so much of the resources in play, both local and international, were focused on fighting Ebola, that the death rate for other, admittedly less severe but nevertheless potentially fatal diseases, like cholera and malaria, trebled. |

On a cheerier note...it's now 44 days since a case of Ebola was notified in Africa.

This will probably be a problem here as well. I can’t imagine that the cancer death rate won’t increase during this pandemic as unfortunately so many of the NHS workforce will either be sick or dealing with Covid-19 patients that they won’t be able to treat those with cancer or other potentially fatal diseases. Furthermore the pandemic will exacerbate many of the other problems with the underfunding of the NHS such as sky-rocketing wait list for routine operations which will cause a great deal of discomfort to those waiting for said operations.

Yes. And when the virus spreads within specialist cancer hospitals it could also be bad. There are lots of people with health conditions who won't be able to see a consultant, perhaps not even their GPs during this. It's a big concern.

I don't wish to sound brutal but we have to face facts some people with fatal diseases who need that sort of life saving treatment will not make it through this outbreak.
Another real worrying area according to many people is mental health, with people not seeing anyone jobs being lost debts mounting etc , , especially if they cannot gain access to medical support |

This is the five consecutive day that the number of positive cases decreases...less recovers in intensive days and number of healed doubleaď the death...lock down misures are working and maybe in the middle of May we could stop the lock down, but not the prevention prevention measures, like wear mask out of home or social distance...it s not easy for a people like italians

so many unanswered and unasked questions. These are not medical questions these are questions aimed at the government. Why do Germany have 4 times as many hospital beds as the nhs, why too do we have fewer doctors and nurses per head that almost every country in europe? why is most of our nhs staff still untested? that is surely essential? not only untested but theyve worked for weeks without the necessary protective equipment? Incidentally have these tests been available to exclusive groups of people before nhs staff and the public? 143000 people have allegedly been tested so far. which is way behind other g8 nations.. Why are we so short of ventillators too, we are now trying to rush them all through last minute? Thegovt keep telling us the economy is strong we are the 5th richest nation in the world allegedly so why is the nhs less well funded than most european nations? Why have we kept passenger flights coming into uk not just for expats but for other passengers too? why are passengers still allowed to travel on the euro train? why did our govt mention herd immunity? why did we close our pubs clubs schools stadiums events weeks after ireland? irish infections are way way below ours..why arent these questions asked by our journalists? We're converting stadiums, training barns as hospitals, are there not suitable buildings around the country to be used as hospitals? especially as millions of people are off work? Austerity innit. The Great holy cow that saw the rich get richer and everyone else get stuck. It should be no surprise then, that given that the UK is run by by the rich for the rich that they've been beavering away, hollowing out public services. UK politics is toxic. More's the pity that Welsh politics is so feeble.

Austerity is a word that seems too broad to me. The tories will argue we had the credit crash after the financial services were deregulated ....Then yes they capped benefits to families. People can argue about that but I suspect the opinion will be split. Public sector wages were frozen and sme's suffered in silence too as UK has a trillion pounds of public debt. Again these policies can be debated. BUT these cutbacks to the NHS are totally unacceptable. Cutbacks to the point we have become one of the smallest per capita NHS workforces and the smallest in terms of beds and investment in the modern world. Yes the NHS an be too burocratic and wasteful and disorganized in many ways. Im sure some efficiency savings they claim could have been made fair enough. But this massive underfunding is a national disgrace and must be rectificed NOW

Grim but not unexpected reading that 20% of small businesses could run out of money:
And even if the Government props them up, the nation will kop the bill after. The Tories never will increase tax on the rich, either, so you know what will happen. I also see social unrest in Italy due to lack of income and food shortages is now rising.

Quite right re. the NHS - I was not an admirer of the last Labour government (especially after the Iraq war), but a now-retired GP friend of mine told me that he'd never seen the NHS as well funded as it was during the end of that period. The Tories, since, have claimed that they have 'increased spending on the NHS year by year' - these are weasel words, because although true -a s far as they go - they totally conceal the fact that these increases have not kept up with inflation, nor do they in any way keep up with increased demand, as the number of older patients with complex conditions increases. No wonder Cummings thinks it would be a good thing for the oldsters to die off from COVID - it'll save the government a lot of money. Of course, those of us who are 70+ and still in decent nick will feel free to disagree with him...

Susannah on good morning Britain said earlier that the government had a dummy run in 2016 on the assumption of a global pandemic of flu and the medical experts said at the time we were drastically short of ventilators should this happen, the health minister said that it would be too expensive, maybe with all the pensions they will save on now that so many are dying they will prepare better for any future crisis.
