Rumblings in Ireland over similar issues too. So much for the union model being the way forward eh.

Time to cut our losses. We could see a mass breakaway here.
the irfu centrally contract all the players dont they? The provinces all seem happy from what i have read/seen, where can we breakaway to?

The most perfect union run module is not all what it seems.

Can we realistically say the the wru represents the game WE support anymore?

Theyve got my vote of no confidence.

Just think what might have been if the WRU didnt own Stradey at the time of the breakaway season.

Or keep the dragons but as a development squad, stop the big money signings. Other regions can send development players there and a team with the likes of Dan Davis, Sam Costellow, Cai Evans from ospreys etc who probably wont see the starting 15 for another couple of years. The rest could be made from semi-pros and welsh prem players trying to showcase their skills and earn a pro contract.
They need to face some facts that rather sadly the Dragons players pretty much always jump ship when they get good and whilst there have been improvements they still aren’t nearly consistent enough.

I agree with your sentiment, but it's no point having an independent club and 15k stadium with no games to play. We're boxed in unless another EPCR type row comes along and the English need us somehow
We're still still here, but I wish we were in an Anglo-Welsh

The only thing I can say with some degree of certainty is that the game we all love is in deep poo. This goes beyond talk of what is better - deep pocketed benefactors or overarching Unions. As in many economic sectors throughout our land all involved are watching their businesses/employment prospects/employers struggle to rescue something none of them would have even remotely thought of planning for.

The next few months should see the structure of our game evolve to what will be near the new norm - I expect to see smaller regional/club squads with far more emphasis on developing academy players; top end Internationals will be faced with pretty uncertain futures as pressure builds on them taking cuts or trying to maintain their rewards by leaving Wales; the 60 cap rule is going to struggle to survive if a player exodus materialises. All in all a pretty dire outlook.

A player exodus to where though? The English clubs are in just as bad a position, if not worse, than the Welsh.
I still wake up late at night and think of what might have been when tim stimpson hit that jammy penalty1

the internationals are under contract , that's the issue . you can juts unilaterally rip up contracts

We face a situation where our biggest expense eg players wages are fixed and we losing pretty much all of our income streams (as are the wru)

This is allegedly the new rugby guidelines

The WRU are looking to start back between October and December.

The WRU are going to follow the welsh government advice and will be acting independently   of what ever else other unions do including England Scotland Ireland

When rugby does start back it will not be a 30 week season

The pro game will be back before the  community game due to extra access to track and testing facilities

The community game will be phased back red amber green, we are currently in red and will be for some time

Good point Steff. I can see a case where established top end guys like Foxy, AWJ, Ken, Tipuric, Cawdor, Biggar, North, Liam & Halfpenny agree to rip up their current contracts and leave to play in France or Japan. France does have a number of very rich benefactors who may be able to afford the economic turmoil and still fund their teams. Japan is mainly sponsored via large corporations who again may see their annual investment in sporting teams as too small, in their corporate picture, to worry about.

I don't want a development squad in the league my team plays in. Why would broadcasters pay for a competition with development squads?

The French and English wouldn't even consider it. That's why they get paid huge sums by BT Sport and Canal sport - because they have their best players playing lots and lots of games.

England may have to.  Their have got teams threatening to break away plus there’s reports of massive financial issues - so it’s not wonderful over the Severn bridge. Thankfully our board appear to be competent and sensible, only time will tell .

i think its the end of big contracts/salaries for the foreseeable future. some of the french teams may be able to but even then their big benefactors will have been hit hard in the pocket and will they have the finances to do it.
english rugby sounds in more of a mess than we are.....which is a rarity!

I agree , it could be that they need our input . Thank goodness it wasn’t ten years ago for us as we’d be well and truly stuffed.  Many teams haven’t got their own ground .

At the moment there seems to be a lot of infighting in the English Premiership but that is only posturing in my opinion. No star player in any country wants to see his top line reduced substantially but pretty soon the financial realities will hit home. Its all well & good saying we have a contract but a contract is only enforceable if the employer is still in business.

There is no doubt that the Premiership teams have far more power within the English system than the Celtic nations who are effectively financially tied to the Unions. It is not beyond my imagination to see a well run outfit like the Scarlets decide that it would be commercially advantageous to join the Gallagher Premiership, which is without a doubt the most competitive league in the Northern Hemisphere.
