And until now Jonathan Thomas didn’t merit a mention.

I just can't get past the disciplinary issues in his teams. Not proven it was deliberate, of course, but he had no issues in public with his players putting in completely illegal tackles on targeted opposition players to remove them from games. Made me suspicious.

He saw nothing wrong with the elbow to Halfpenny's face which put him out for - what - 6 months or so? (I suppose - neither did the citing powers. A pathetic miscalculation, if ever I saw one. - Or was the guy banned? I forget.) I would no way want Cheika. Robertson or Lam would seem the best bets, if the next campaign goes very badly.

I agree Aber. Cheika has a good CV and he did a good job at Leinster. His continuing support of his players thuggery has made him persona non grata as far as I am concerned. If Wales don't improve and get at least 2 probably 3 from 5 at the next 6 nations I think Pivac will be gone along with Stevo and Humphries in all probability. If we want to play the free flowing adventurous rugby then Lam or Robertson, Joseph is an interesting call as he has made Japan a very attractive team. If we want to win regardless we could do a lot worse than Baxter who has Exeter playing extremely efficient, if not entertaining rugby.

Baxter is certainly an interesting one, a couple of my friends who live on the wrong side of the bridge speak very highly of him & I asked if they thought he would ever become the English head coach & they were unsure as to whether he would be suited to it. They seemed to think that the reason he wouldn't necessarily succeed is that his success at Exeter is down to being able to spend so much time creating a winning environment & being so hands on. Whereas at International level you get the troops for a couple of months at a time. Regardless I think he is a world class coach & if he showed a bit of interest in us then I think we would be foolish not to seriously consider him. Given that the break clause is at the end of 2021, there is a chance Baxter would want to bring at least one more European cup back to Sandy Park before moving on. But you never know.

GPR you can also cross Dan McFarland off the list for any vacancies as he has just renewed his contract with Ulster.
A popular decision in Ulster and hoping for a special celebration to morrow night at the RDS.

I will certainly do that Airdaa. He has done an excellent job so far. Why do you think Dwayne Peel left for what is being talked of as a similar role at the Blues???

I hope Pivac will not fail and can do his job, but if it should happen, this time wru cant risk with an other "new" coach. This time have to sign coach with high calibro, my choices will be one between Joseph and Robertson..
In every case needs a figure who can be a connector between the 4 regione, as happen in Scotland. A coach able to mix the best of all the welsh teams. Cant do as happen in Italy when you see a totally different play style that neve see in club rugby.. Edited by Mr Ian - 07 January 2021 at 4:03pm |

GPR he seemed to be happy enough here, but he is quite a quiet bloke, I personally think he is an excellent attack coach but am not sure how he would do in top job.
Certainly he will have learned a lot from Dan and his stay at Ulster. He has young family and I suspect this could be a good time to move family wise and it is back to Wales The feeling here is that Payne may move to attack from defence. And Dan Soper our Skills Coach moving to defence. You may not know Soper he is a Kiwi who came here for a couple of years to play full Back for Banbridge in the AlI. Took a teaching job and met another teacher and married her.Went back to NZ but returned to N.Ireland and to teaching, he graduated in to coaching atSchools. His last teaching job was asDirector of Rugby at RBAI. Both Lowry and Hume are among his school products. He told the Supporters at a meeting after his appointment that he was living his dream and couldn’t believe he was working withJarrod Payne who as an ex Fullback himself he had stood on the terrace in awe of his skills. Soper was under selling himself having watched him playing against my own club he was an excellent player.
He is very settled here and his wife is teaching at a very good school with family at school so can’t see him moving on. He seems to have had quite an input to the young players coming through so Dan may think that this role is more important and bring some one else in to fill either defence or attack. Specialist player development coaches are more valuable than head coaches. If they have an eye for raw talent as well then their employers are well set. Gareth Jenkins has been our most valuable employee for decades although I'm not sure he still draws a salary. And you only have to glance at what Stuart Lancaster is doing in Dublin.... Both these two were failures as international coaches but.....

You asked about Mark McCall but I am not going to answer that one as I know him personally and his late father who both played for our local club.
I saw on another thread someone suggesting Young as DoR and Peel as Head coach in a similar set up to Leinster. From what I have seen of Peel I suspect that he would be happier ina track suit on the field and leaving the admin and PR aspects to someone else. He never seemed to be pushing for any 3xposure at Ulster and Dan doesn’t hog the limelight
