Don't forget an MP with a conflict of interest, and a local paper influenced by self interest!

You might, but you wouldn't really be head of the queue, now would you?

It's come to this because the Scarlets wouldn't merge with Swansea when they had the chance - poor financial management.  I'm glad they didn't, and if this really is to be the last season, let's go out with a bang, eh?

But do you not agree that there was always a chance it would get called in, and the WAG have officially stated tonight that whoever was assisting the Scarlets in their planning application should have advised them of this.

IMO, the WAG were always going to call this in due to the relationship between the Scarlets and CCC over the project; CCC could never be viewed as independent and impartial as their involvment is critical to the move.

The Scarlets should have seen this coming.

The club and CCC did everything by the book and CCC assured the club it wouldn't get called in.

Of course there is the possibility of any planning proposal being called in though, so I guess it's fair enough to say we should have been braced for it even if the chances were supposedly tiny and after assurances from CCC.

Maybe we underestimated the lobbying capacity of the S9 and the shambolic handling of this by Catherine Thomas.

1. Well SG assured us that we would be in a new stadium at the start of 2007 so I guess assurances in WestWales are about as solid as a chocolate fireguard!

The way I see it, Stuart Gallacher has made assurances to creditors and the fans based on the fact that the project wouldn`t get called in. He has also been way, way out in his estimation of when the new stadium would be ready. Now maybe he is just repeating what he has been told but it was particularly naieve all things taken into consideration.

Before scrum V last night he passed some diabolical comment like "its a local issue, we are not building a wind farm". He is obviously under the misguided impression, either through ignorance or arrogance, that applying for planning permission for 450 new dwellings is the same as asking the local council if he can build a new garage.

What people seem to forget is that CCC are going ahead with the Pemberton project with or without us. The current stand-off suits them down to the ground because even though they may not be getting 450 new dwellings (are they really needed in Llanelli??) they will be saving £18million on the building of a new stadium; and by the time WAG decide you could probably double the building cost to about £32million.

So in effect, the £7million or so we will be adding is quite inconsequential.

The stadium will be ready for next season as it is a part contstruction stadium. All that is needed to be done is to slot it together. The Scarlets just need the cash to keep them going until the approval comes through.

I know what you are saying, but had Llanelli merged with Swansea then we'd be playing out of the Liberty now and there would be no rugby west of the Loughor. If we go belly up then the nearest professional rugby would be at the Liberty anyway so the fight is to maintain top class rugby for West Wales.

Absolutely.  There has to be some doubt about whether West Wales can sustain a professional rugby team without constant benefaction.  No doubt The Scarlets might have been better managed, but it's hard to see how they would have maintained a position in the professional ranks from the available income even with exemplary management.   The debts might have been less, but not much so.

As it is, the club/region is between a rock and a hard place.  Stradey is too big and expensive for semi-professional rugby, and too old and crappy for professional rugby.  If the Scarlets can't move, they might as well fold and Llanelli RFC should then retire to more modest premises.  Most Scarlets supporters could not, I think, cope with second tier rugby.

So if CCC are going ahead with Pemberton... Start building the stadium and then we get a "NO" from the assembly, the stadium is then a waste of money, and empty but surely if they start building the stadium and we get an answer from the assembly by MAY () then would they feel obliged to approve it as the new stadium was half there for us already!

Then we get the trouble of keeping us going until the planning comes through...

I'm not sure but someone MIGHT, just MIGHT come in to save us...

Look at Wrexham FC for example, administration for a year or 2 (?)! Someone came to help them, they were still playing games...

As I understand it, there is no planning problem with the building of the stadium.

There is nothing stopping CCC building it and us playing in it.

The problem is the Scarlets have been shafted by CCC because a condition of the new stadium was the the housing develoment at Stradey.

CCC could effectivly build a new stadium if they wanted to.

Aside from the money they need to build it, and the money we need to continue playing in it, right?

That's the point - Why don't they? Then the WAG would surely feel obliged!

Excellent post Dan, I just wish more people would understand the reality.
