Car radio systems do get extremely warm Abbey and Vauxhauls don't have the best ventilation/heating cooling....etc. Electrical components break down over time, dry soldered joints, cables, connections, capacitors etc all give up the ghost. Reading your first post my thoughts was power loss, ie the unit was either a) bad power connection or b) internal power control breaking down.

My BMW system lost sound on front passenger speaker, stripped the door and removed everything and found nothing un-toward. Had to send the unit away for specialist to fix a common fault I'm told IF you don't use the system regularly. Then my right hand headlamp wouldn't switch off, stayed on no matter where the headlamp control switch was. Found again it was a computer module control fault....AGAIN A COMMON FAULT.

Car electrics are a pain...personally I would change the unit...it's probably cheaper in the long run.

In 1972, Roy Bergiers scored that try and said "that was for you lofty"

Thanks Lofty. There are loads on EBay for around £30 with their codes. I may just do that if, when I take it out to have a look, I find nothing obvious.

The alternator belt went recently and the garage said there was a lot of debris left behind. Is there a ventilation area accessible from the engine compartment?

Doubt any debris went into the ventilation system mate tbh...garages are notorious drama Queens and paint unbelievable bullpoo. I done my Beemer with parts on eBay when I restored her, cheap as chips tbh..passenger side front wing in immaculate condition for £30 and in the right paint code, bottom line it's cheaper to buy a second hand unit than effect a repair...if you have the code with the new unit I would go for it personally.
It not even worth the hassle...just plug in and go.
