Driving into work this morning & on one of the radio's, 5Live I think, & they were going through the weekends rugby in Japan. One of the pundits said that it is now World Rugby's responsibility to help the tier 2 nations grow & develop for the good of the game, in particular Japan. The presenter asked where do you sit them, either in the 6 Nations or the Rugby Championship & whilst the pundit (can't remember who it was!!) was honest & said he didn't know he did point out that Japan are now ahead of France, Scotland, Argentina & Italy in the rankings. Italy really haven't developed in the last few years so should Japan take their place in the 6 nations? Or is that just asking for a logistical nightmare? Should they go into the Rugby Championship & make that into a 5 way competition? Or are Japan not going to be able to replicate the performances they have so far shown in a home tournament? Then there is the continued development of sides such as Fiji, Georgia, Namibia etc how do the Tier 1 nations help there? Should sides be sending A sides there to tour? Should Tier 1 nations sacrifice one AI each year & agree to play a tier 2 nation, even in a smaller stadium? |

Lets be honest about this World Rugby have been trying to solve this conundrum but have met with huge resistance particularly from the 6 Nations teams who jealously guard that tournament. Logistically the Rugby Championship in the Southern Hemisphere should take in Japan, Fiji, Tonga & Samoaetc & form two divisions with promotion & relegation. The same should be done in the northern Hemisphere with Russia, Georgia, Rumania etc forming a 2nd 6 nations division with promotion & relegation.

Promotion/ relegation is the way, can’t be having a tournament with more than 6 teams otherwise we might as well not bother having international players as they’ll be away more than here. Fiji, Japan and Georgia certainly deserve a spot with the tier 1 nations and I thought we normally do have a tier 2 nation in the ai’s?

I like the idea of promotion/relegation in the 2 tournaments as it will open up for the Tier 2 nations which can be a good thing. I think we do usually have one game against a Tier 2 national Sospan, however do we need to be touring these countries more to develop interest internally within such countries?

Interesting view on how Jamie Joseph prepared his players for their home RWC.
Logistically, you can't fit Japan into the 6 Nations - travel times & time differences just don't work - but they could more easily join the Rugby Championship. Add Fiji, too, and you'd have a Southern Hemisphere 6Ns. Vested interests will determine this after the euphoria of RWC has passed away - Italy will fight tooth and nail to avoid being replaced by Georgia in the European 6Ns, and South Africa have already been instrumental in removing the Sun Wolves from Super Rugby. If Japan had played their 1st team players in that league, they may have performed well enough to not be kicked out, but equally they may not have been cooked to perfection to make the RWC quarter-finals, either. And the Jaguares experiment in Argentina could be said to have failed for this reason, with Los Pumas not beating either England or France to make the knock-outs.

This is exactly what the Nations League was about, yet suprise, suprise the greedy Six Nations were too interested in making more money for themselves with CVC (which I find a disaster btw.)

Might be a necessity for the Pro 14 but can’t see how it’s a necessity for the Six Nations.

The Rugby Championship could look something like this:
Tier 1: SA, NZ, Aus, Arg Tier 2 Pacific: Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Japan Tier 2 Americas: Canada, USA, Uruguay, Brazil Top Tier 2 side plays off with bottom place Tier 1 side for promotion. |
