This is a good point.
Jamie and Lydiate relieved of duties after year 1, Foxy hardly getting much game time due to the French God of center play, Rougetie, and now Halfpenny hung out to dry at the eleventh hour.

Some of the comments about Halfpenny on this thread are really distasteful, as well as being totally wrong of course.

Don't disagree and if he has to spend a season playing for (for instance) Bristol for a couple of thousand a game to realise where he went wrong over the last winter, then that might sort his mind out. There is no doubt he was attracted to the money on offer from Toulon in the middle of last winter to the exclusion of all offers from west of the Severn. He and Toulon deserve each other.

This.

No player goes to France for money of course.

No some go to England instead.

I think he has been a world class player and a very popular one with his peers too, but is not worth the money for the Scarlets given their budget and development strategy.

In 2011-13 maybe, but in 2017-18 under the current rules, no.

Just an opinion, of course.

Also, some adjusted better to France than others.  Takes a lot of guts and courage to make it in a foreign country especially if there are home town favourites in your position.

Welsh rugby is far more comfortable by comparison.

So what would be your preferred basis for a professional rugby player's choice of contract?

Should he sign for the team most in need of his particular talents?  Or the one with the most dedicated support?  Or the side whose stadium is closest to where he was born?

Given the brevity of a rugby player's career, in what sense did he go "wrong" signing for Toulon?

If the quoted offer of 750k euros is accurate then it would have been very hard to refuse. It does appear that Boudejal has thrown his toys out of the pram once Toulon lost the top 14 final. I don't see a player of Halfpenny's ability sweating too much over a contract for next season. Wasps, Toulouse, Stade & Montpellier to name a few. It will take some change of heart for us to see him back in Wales.

I think you will find it was brewing long before that.

He went wrong in accepting the offer from Toulon without the contract being there to sign. That gave Toulon the chance to withdraw the offer at an astonishingly late stage. Now that is probably more the agent's fault than the player but given that the decision was made in the middle of the winter but the contract was still unsigned (unoffered?) in June, what was going on? An attraction to the illusion of the large salary offer overcoming all doubts......

I think there is a lot more to Leigh's terms at Toulon than is apparent on here and through the idiotic reports on Wales on line. Through my lens he may have been guilty of getting the wrong side of Mr Mourad, but that's not really much of a challenge these days.

Also these notions floating about that Leigh is in some sort of firesale situation are mis-informed really.

I would think Mr Mourad was not happy that A- Leigh did not [play in the final, B- They lost.

The result Leigh is looking for a new club-----sad reflection of the times.
Be careful when you pick up the stick.........IT MAY BE THE WRONG END!!!!!!!!!!

I guess whoever signs him won't realistically get him until after the Autumn internationals and will lose him again 2 months later to the 6 nations. With the time it takes to bed a new player into a team he can't really be that attractive to most teams with his salary. It's a shame that a player of his undoubted quality can be left in this position simply for been good enough to be selected for a lions tour.

These players want their cake and eat it! They move outside of wales get payed the big bucks and still excpect theyre employers to respect their international ambitions and committments. The success stories in france have usually been foreigners who have prioritised their club career over anything else.

Halfpenny as a professional sportsman is chasing the Pounds Embarrassed( can you believe there was 240 pennies in the Pound once or 480 Halfpennies!) and I suspect will go to Bath or somewhere over the border. Wonder if Mr Priestland will ever return to us aka a James Hook?
