MacGowan to play at jazz landmark

Shane MacGowan
MacGowan has been described as a "songwriting genius"
Legendary singer Shane MacGowan is to play a mini-residency at London's famous Ronnie Scott's jazz club.

The former Pogues frontman will perform four dates during "a month of Sundays" at the Soho venue early next year.

The shows may be recorded for DVD and are expected to draw high-profile fellow musicians to play on the bill.

MacGowan plays live only intermittently with his band, The Popes. He is also due to perform eight dates with a reformed Pogues line-up in December.

His spokeswoman said he was "on a roll" after playing at summer festivals and completing tracks for a Popes album.

"After a lull a year ago, he's having a creative surge; he's on the ball at the moment," she said.

MacGowan is due to play Ronnie Scott's on the last Sunday in January and first three Sundays in February 2005. He may also perform a further show in November this year.

MacGowan was lead singer of 1980s folk-punk band The Pogues
He played at the Royal Albert Hall in April alongside Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

He has also recently performed a string of low-key impromptu shows at a pub in Archway, north London.

He was on stage in Prague in the summer, and is due to play a show with The Popes as part of Edinburgh Festival on 21 August.

'Genius'

He has also completed a film, playing a busker in The Libertine alongside Johnny Depp and John Malkovich.

His burst of activity has led to hopes among fans of a return to the musical form that saw him hailed as a "songwriting genius" with folk-rock band The Pogues.

During the 1980s he wrote a wealth of songs which are widely considered classics, including A Pair of Brown Eyes, Sally MacLennane and Fairytale of New York.

One of rock's most famous drinkers, MacGowan's enigmatic image has been reinforced by his erratic appearances on stage.

The guy is a legend, injected the spirit of punk into traditional folk music.
