We've trimmed quite a lot of money off our wage bill for next season with the departures of: MacLeod, Bater, Martens, Brew, Gav Evs.

I would also imagine at least a few of the following won't be here: Schwalger, Meeuws, Gavin Thomas, Ceiz, Dafydd James.

There's potentially a huge amount of money being saved there.

I'd say the 6 new contracts announced will increase the wage bill by £150-£200kpa. Rhys Thomas is another £160k. Looking good that Barry is coming back. A high profile winger would be another £150k+. GQ shouldn't be expensive if he comes back. Pugh won't be expensive.

IF that rumour is true and we can't afford Braid, then it's pretty worrying all things considered.

From this week's 'The Rugby Paper',

"Waratahs captain Phil Waugh has rejected reports that he has signed with Welsh Premiership club Llanelli, stating that he is still intent on reclaiming the Wallabies #7 jersey."

Waugh, 29, and with 77 caps said yesterday that he was still negotiating with the ARU and NSW rugby. But, it was reported on www.theroar.com.au that the specialist openside had already signed with Llanelli for next season.

"I know nothing of that". Waugh said last night. "I don't know where that has come from. I haven't signed with anyone."
When asked if he been negotiating - or held talks - with Llanelli, Waugh did not deny it. "I have spoken to a few different people" he said.

Waugh intimated albeit in a joking tone, there had been some contact with the club. "I have even spoken to 'Lyno'," he said, referring to former Wallabies and Waratahs #8 David Lyons who is now in his first year playing with Llanelli.

Waugh repeated that his first wish was to remain in Australia and with the Waratahs. "It is a week to week thing." he said of his negotiations with the ARU.

I'm not sure I believe this. How expensive is this player that we can't afford the rest of the salary? We wouldn't have to start paying it until he actually became our player in July/August.

Good find, Richie.

The club really need to smart here, because there's every chance Waugh wants to stay in Oz and is using European interest to drive up his ARU contract.

I'm not too bothered if we don't sign a quality 7. I think our recruitment efforts should lie elsewhere (second row). Nevertheless the rumour about us moving for a 7 and then not having the money to pay his wages is very very worrying indeed if true.

Difficult to believe that. Not that we couldnt afford Waugh, but that we paid £50k. Why the hell would we hand over £50k? Surely the player would sign the best contract available. Only then would any money change hands. Surely we didn't offer a contractwe couldn't afford?

Surely?

Waugh is not going. This is but a rumour designed to put people off the scent of the real story. The Welsh club in question is trying desperately to keep a lid on it, since their bid failed on the player they were actually looking for.

How the hell could the Scarlets start a rumour in Oz? It's all just froth

I agree. Even if we'd paid 50K signing-on fee, we'd have 3 or 4 months to ensure that there was adequate funds for the contract.

As far as I see it there are probably three possible scenario's here:
1) All of this is true. We are skint, we tried to get Braid, he signed and now we owe him some money because we pulled out of the deal
2) We were going to sign Braid but have signed Waugh instead and have to now renege on a contract with Braid. The Waugh contract only starts in Jan 2010 when his Aus contract runs out and Pugh has been signed for a year as a stop gap until Waugh arrives.
3) All of these are false rumours.
Hopefully 2 is true, I suspect 3 is probably most realistic but if you believe what you read on here 1 is true.
Welcome to the World of the Scarlet rumour mill!!!!! Clear as mud as always!!!!

Having watched both play there's not much difference between them IMO. Both are small, quick, traditional #7s with good leadership qualities. Waugh is a "bigger name" but is not £100K+ better than Braid.

Sorry, I missed it before. To answer your question, more than 4, surely. Your're implying that Braid was second only to McCaw, which I think is not correct. I get a bit confussed with Masoe and Collins' playing positions (I mean when playing for the ABs or Hurricanes), but certainly one would have started ahead of Braid, and come to think of it, Holah as well.
I can't say I've seen much of Braid, which in itself is telling, and so far I've read every kind of opinion about him, from being oustanding and with a good workrate to being a lightweight that is not that great in the contact area. I've got no such doubts regarding Phil Waugh, and my opinion about the revenue and attraction that Waugh can generate over Braid stands.

I don't know what to make out of all this rumours. I simply can't believe we can't/won't honour a contract (or pre-contract or whatever that 50K was part of). As Mike said we are going to save a good sum from all the players gone and leaving, and 7 is the one position where me must invest more heavily (pressuming we're going to stick with Maling Confused)

Some news from the club (like they've done with the King-WM annual prank) would be appreciated, but I know I'm asking for the moon here.

The breakdown area is so important nowadays that I think a top quality 7 is absolutely imperative. Gav Thomas will be 32 just after the start of this season and won't have played rugby for almost 12 months, Jon Eds could make a regional squad player, same for Pugh, but we desperately need a first team openside.

It's such a key position that I think if we go in with the current 3, then it's hard to see how we can compete seriously in the HEC.

Depends if it was a first refusal deposit? We put down the money to secure a signing (there may have been others interested in his services), and then we pulled out for whatever reason, thus loosing the deposit?

Edwards work (when he played) was outstanding this season. The games against the Blues and Stade were excellent and he played a massive role at the breakdown (breaking his arm in the process).

If he can do the job against Stade (albeit you don't know what you're getting with Stade), I don't think he can be classed as a squad player - he's a starter for me.

If you're losing your soul and you know it, then you've still got a soul left to lose.
