Thought I would start a topic as this subject is going to get busy soon. I think we are all happy with our first new signing - Liam. Retention of Halfpenny & Steff should end our business for the back 3. Back 5 of the scrum is strong but I am not aware which players are out of contract in May - Blade? McLeod? Cummins?

Two positions have been discussed mainly for strengthening - centre & tight head with Werner possibly retiring. The more I read about this guy WillGriff John the more I am impressed. He is a real unit touching 20 stone and is excellent in the loose as he played a lot of rugby at No 8; he is extremely fit and durable and is renowned for his destructive tackling. His scrummaging has taken him a while to get on top of since his move from the back row but he has become very dependable for anchoring the Sale scrum & at 27 would give us years of service ahead.

As 80% of his salary would be looked after by the WRU once he was back in Wales provided he gets in and stays in the Welsh squad he is someone we need to be talking to. I remain a fan of Owen Williams as someone who could play 12 & 10 for us. He is back fit & much will depend on where he stands with offers for next season.

I'm not sure that's a given but I do think he is someone we should be looking at signing for the long term.

I believe Blade has another year to run on his current deal. Cummins could very well be one of the ones out of contract along with Halfpenny, Steff Evs, Patch, Cawdor, Macleod, Samson, Kruger, Elias? Marc Jones? Tom James, Tom Prydie, Fonotia, Asquith? going to be interesting to see how retention goes. and obviously that will dictate recruitment.
as for WillGriff John, he would be a brilliant signing...but I believe he's not long penned a 3 year deal at Sale. I would not be surprised to see Kruger having another year - unless he is ready to retire.
Owen Williams, Callum Sheedy, Rhys Priestland etc...plenty of Welsh options  to bring in. Owen Williams could also cover 12.

A centre in a dreamworld would be coming in as well. A hard explosive attacker. Obviously a player like Aki, Halaholo etc...someone who just like Parkes was during our championship season, available all year. they are extremely valuable.

Assuming we lose nobody in back row, then we are on a winner there.
Lock...if we decide let Cummins go, I would assume another comes in unless they think the u20s lads are ready. but I would assume they may take Helps spot:
Ball / Lousi / Ratuva / Rawlins / Helps / Drake / Jones / Price (the latter two obviously very young)

I think we are ok at wing. but obviously much of this depends on retention. If Halfpenny / Steff / Prydie / Tom James leave...then obviously we need some signings there.

Think if Prydie & James leave they will be replaced by academy guys like Tomi Lewis & Tom Rogers. Asquith I think signed a new deal last season, he, Steff, Corey, Joe Roberts & Osian are 5 guys who have have a lot of growth in them. Fonotia has had some decent games and is an important experienced head when stars away. I would renew his maybe for 12 months until Scott comes home!!!!! & look at another 10/12 unless of course Steff Hughes is still looked upon as good 10 cover as i think he has all the skills for a very good 10. Then we could look for an out and out overseas 12.

If the WRU are paying 80% of these guys salary's aren't they going to get the final say on how many games these players can play?

I'm not going to say it's too early for this - but it is marginally early, maybe!

For example - one of our main problem positions ATM is 13... now, we know Foxy is out for this season, but he 'should' be back next year, so massively strengthening the midfield. Also, Fonotia is no mean player, but he, too, is out injured ATM, and we don't know what shape he'll be in come September... So, if those two are 100% by then, we don't need another 13, probably, with Baldwin coming through and others such as Steff Hughes and Asquith capable of doing a job in the position.

TH prop is another area of concern. I'd love for us to sign Willgriff John if that is possible (contractually and financially), but it's not possible to be sure what physical shape Samson will be in by next season - it's my impression that he's been diminished a bit by a run of injuries in recent times... will he get back to full power? Too early to say... and Kruger seems to roll on like Ol' Man River... he may well be good fro another season. Still - sign Willgriff if we can.

I'll return to this topic in a few weeks when things may be clearer!

One would assume so - same as NDCs in that sense. Maybe someone has the facts?

That's no different to now or the NDCs. The WRU dictated when the players were back from World Cup for example. Same goes for rest periods after AIs and 6N.
Even AWJ who is paid 100% by WRU has a 10 game limit per season. so I think we may just see the 16 game rule come back if anything (with allowances made for play offs etc - but by the time they have their recovery periods, its not far off that number anyway. Apart from Simon Thomas article, haven't really seen much about it yet.

it may be my hang up about the manner in which he dumped us years back but then since then he has shown no apparent interest in Wales or the Regions so he is not my personal top of my list !
