The Blues have a done some tidy recruitment there. Didn't realise how sharp it was looking - and we've given them Josh to boot (you might want to add him to the Blues "ins").

But we're, erm, a bit lagging aren't we.

Think they are also looking at another kiwi lock and Worcesters Semisi Taulava. Saying that think we've spoken to Taulava too.

Thing is we have replaced Foxy going out with Reggie coming in.  And Turnbull was in a well stocked position already.  So maybe we have decided that Warren Jnr, and Kyle should be ready to push for the wing places for next season, meaning all we need is an 8?  Unless we are going to lose more.

We have Berkley coming in, for short term.

Recruitment always seems to be last minute given the past few seasons.

I wish that was the case. Youngsters don't seem to be given a chance early enough in my opinion. No competition for places, poor performances are rewarded with another start the next week.

I'd be more worried but for the re-signing of Cawdor and Scott W Thumbs Up

As for the other regions - most seem to have lost more quality than they've gained, TBH - not surprising given the doubts about finances for next season.

the drags have certainly improved their first team, that's 3 players who will walk into their first xv.

If they get a decent tight head (big if with what they cost) and lock that's a tidy team

A tidy team, that could become a very weak team if they pick up on or two injuries.  They seem to be doing the same as the Blues did last season, building a first team at the cost of any depth.

I'm not sure whether Byrne for Dan Evans is a good deal either. Maybe it would have been 2 years ago but Dan Evans has matured a lot recently and Byrne is pushing on a bit.

Gavin Henson is poised to be the next piece in the jigsaw being assembled by Lyn Jones as he attempts to transform Newport Gwent Dragons from no-hopers into Wales’ most powerful region.

And exciting outside-half runner Matthew Morgan, who guided Wales Under-20s to victory over New Zealand and a third place finish at the 2012 Junior World Championship in South Africa, is also in line for a move to Rodney Parade.

Do you honestly think that any Welsh region could persuade any decent player from outside Wales to come and join us at the moment when no one knows what the hell is happening?
Yes you will sign has beens like Stankovich who is moving from Tigers to Dragons as a Squad player and the likes of Byrne who want to come home. I know it has been said it is a short term contract but Ollie B. I would put in that category as well as even if he did stay and was on form he is still close to home to make it work at this late stage of his career.

Added a few, let me know if I've forgotten anyone.

Looks like the Dragons have been the busiest with being linked with AJ, Henson, Morgan etc.

The Ospreys have renewed a lot of contracts recently with Bevington, Beck, AWJ, Spratt, Walker,Arhip etc

Although Blues have already recruited well, not sure what impact the resignation of PD will have. PD did persuade PT to look closer to home at Welsh talent, rather than overseas. Be interesting to see if new DOR will continue that trend.

few regional signings today with Harry Robinson to the Scarlets and Blues announcing the signing of Treviso international 8 Vosawai. Blues also rumoured to be speaking to former All Black lock Jarrad Hoeata and Dan Bowden of the Tigers.

Blues have also re signed Gavin Evans, and the proposed move of Dafydd Hewitt to London Welsh now appears to be off.

the blues have also lost a lot of quality

halfpenny,b davies, copeland, robinson and god knows if they will play warbirton don't forget this Vosawai guy will also miss games when he is away with Italy.

I'd be amazed if we finished below them next year

personally agree with dantheman, think both the blues & dragons overhaul of their squads will make them stronger next season.

both have added experience and quality to their squads. agree blues have lost some quality too in halfpenny, copeland & davies. but how much the blues would have seen of those players before the lead up to the WC I'd imagine would be limited.

next season should be interesting.

Dragons are closing in on front five signings:

DIRECTOR of rugby Lyn Jones says Newport Gwent Dragons are closing in on seasoned recruits in the tight five that will shore up their struggling set piece.

The Rodney Parade region have failed to find a solution to season upon season of their pack being shunted backwards.

Last Sunday they were humbled by Connacht's driving lineout and scrum, forcing Jones to change his entire front row after just half an hour.

They fared better when 39-year-old ex-England tighthead Duncan Bell, who was tempted out of retirement by the region and who is unable to train full-time because of his job as a http://www.thisismoneyback.co.uk/money.php" rel="nofollow - mortgage consultant, was on the pitch but that is a short-term fix until the end of the season.

Jones has already moved to secure the services of savvy Leicester loosehead Boris Stankovich for next season and the 34-year-old will be joined by some more seasoned campaigners at tighthead and in the second row, with signings set to be announced in the coming weeks.

"We have been talking to several players," said the director of rugby. "You certainly don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out where we need to strengthen the squad and that's what we are doing.

"We have worked towards signings for next season and I am planning way ahead and also thinking about a year from now because you can't get to March, April and May before thinking about signings."

Experience has been a key theme in Jones' recruitment so far with 33-year-old full back Lee Byrne and 27-year-old wing http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/search/?search=Aled+Brew%2C+Newport+Gwent+Dragons&topic_id=1710" rel="nofollow - Aled Brew joining Stankovich in penning deals at Rodney Parade.

"The deterioration of this squad over a number of years has been unacceptable," said Jones. "I need to reverse that and it takes time.

"We have a good academy here with promising players. Lots of them will come through but first I need to bring champions into this changing room because we are used to losing and that mentality needs to be changed.

"We need to bring in seasoned internationals and the Boris Stankoviches of this world who know what the game is about.

"We need to increase that pool to get the young Welsh players to drive through. The knock-on effect of the older fellas coming in is that the new talent will be able to flourish and learn in a proper environment."

Dragons have bolstered their front five with the return of 37 year old Ian Gough from London Irish. They have also signed tighthead Dave Young from Jersey. He came through the Leicester ranks with current Dradons recruit Stankovich.

Not marquee signings granted, but will bolster and add experience to a problem area for them.

Gough has been task with helping to develop the currently young stable of dragon locks of Corry Hill, Mathew Screech and Joe Davies. So they are looking to develop the younger locks, it's just hard for a young lock in a retreating pack.

Dragons have spent last 3 years trying to bring through Dan Way and Nathan Buck at tighthead to be fair. They've just haven't been up to it, maybe this additional competition for places might benefit them.

the coaches don't seem to fancy them do they? if they didn't get a chance this year they may never get a chance.

Climo is in the mix as well but tbh he doesn't look a winger to me

Highlanders boss Jamie Joseph has been linked with the vacant director of rugby position with the Welsh region Cardiff Blues.

Joseph, whose contract with the Highlanders finishes at the end of the current Super Rugby season, wouldn't confirm whether he is considering his options beyond the Dunedin-based franchise's campaign.

The Cardiff job has been vacant since the beginning of March after Phil Davies resigned.

Joseph said ahead of Friday's clash with the Rebels in Dunedin that his options beyond his current contract is not a priority for him at the moment.

"My focus is solely on the Highlanders," Joseph told TVNZ's One Sport.

"I've got a job at hand here.

"I've got a Rebels game I've got to win. I've got the loyal Otago public here, loyal Invercargill public here, that want to see a successful Highlanders team."

Wales boss Warren Gatland is involved in the recruiting process for the Cardiff position and according to reports the chances are good that a New Zealander will replace Davies.

The All Blacks' World Cup winning coach Sir Graham Henry and Robbie Deans were named as possible targets, early on, while Auckland coach Wayne Pivac and the Hurricanes' Mark Hammett have also been mentioned.

Dragons DOR Lyn Jones has stated that Dragons wont sign Gavin Henson.

Also Adam Jones will sign CC with WRU. Apparently Ospreys withdrew their contract offer few weeks back, after contract discussions dragging on so long.

Henson gets a very positive write up by the Head Coach about his professionalism and ability to play multiple positions in the backs and a valuable asset to them -what a shame he wasted 3-4 years of his life on issues which seemed to eminate from him and Ms Church. He still offers Wales a different centre option in this age of high injury rugby if keeps fit and consistent (and behaves!)

good signing, the drags are reaping the same rewards as the other despite not even achieving hc rugby and having next to no one in the welsh squad.

That's not right

Really good signing from the Drags, its this calibre of player we need to fill our 8 slot. Available all year, good pedigree and right age.

Being reported that Bristol are now in the running to sign Adam Jones. Apparently they are offering him 300k, he reunites with former coach Sean Holley, plus he doesn't have to move from his Merthyr home.

Guess the saddest part of the report in the Rugby Paper was that Adam Jones was close to signing a deal with the Ospreys, before the WRU came in with a bigger offer. Think it's disgraceful that the WRU are trying to outbid the regions. Even worse lying about it, and denying that they are competing with the regions.

I hope he goes to Bristol as opposed to signing a CC.

Can't see any way back from him and the O's...they are clearly miles apart.

Big exodus of top players from the O's this season.

Not sure what their financial situation is Will. But I'm surprised with their recruitment so far to be truthful. Seems more like squad fillers, rather than any upgrades to the 1st team.

Be interesting to see in what order the regions finish up in next season.

Don't think it's financial in the conventional sense, just seems to be that they are offering deals at what they perceive the market value to be (within the existing contracted players that is).

Front 5 recruitment looks to be their need.

Worrying thing about Bristol is them signing Welsh youngsters for their academy system. Hasn't Cardiff boy Callum Sheedy Capt of Millfield school just signed for them? Not sure how many Welsh youngsters we are going to lose to the English system.

I'd say that the richer the English system gets, the more we'll see Welsh pros and more so youngsters going to clubs like Bristol, Gloucester and Bath.

After all, it's not that far if people want to commute to any of these sides.

Wouldn't surprise me if they already have people scouting the Welsh schools and colleges for talent to go into their Academy sides TBH.

Sure that's how Wales lost out on the Vunipola brothers.

Could well be.

They both played in the same age-grade rugby side as Faletau.

If I'm not mistaken played for East Wales U11's v West Wales U11's featuring Sanjay and Scott amongst others.

I thought they ended up living in England by the time they were 16 or so?

Didnt they go to Bath college or possibly Hartbury? That was when we lost them. Big blunder to whoever picks players. I would have thought having been "in the system" early age grade I am surprised they were slipped through the net.

Think they and Faletau played junior rugby for Panteg RFC? Before all three moved to colleges in England. Guess in some ways we are lucky that the Dragons kept tabs on Faletau, or we could have lost all three.

Saying that the Blues have extended it's scouting network to now include English colleges. So I guess it works both ways :

Obviously, I have not seen any of their games at that level but I would be willing to bet that they probably stood out a bit!!!

Are you serious??!!!!

Please tell me that photo has been "shopped" to within an inch of it's life.

Wasn't Harry Robinson one of the "golden boys" of Welsh youth rugby (always got capped at all levels despite other players possibly being better than him - much like Dwayne Peel - He basically had a face that fits)??

If this is true, and they both played in the same team, then there must have been district/regional scouts watching the games and seemingly failing to notice the Tongan monster who was a foot taller than all of the other kids??!!!

Now that Moffat has a plan for grassroots rugby in Wales, I assume that page 1 of his manifesto should state the following:

"If any coach/scout can see an immensely large child with Paciffic Island heritage smashing through other children at a local club game, they are obilged to phone Warren Gatland directly (within 3 minutes) or face disciplinary action"

They were both offered sports scholarships at Millfied and Harrow schools, that's how they ended up in the English system.
Gareth Delve was ignored in Wales as a lad and offered an opportunity at Bath, never ever played club rugby for a Welsh side.
