As the season draws to a close the Scarlets have added another two new recruits to their ranks for the forthcoming 2018-19 season in the Guinness PRO14 and European Rugby Champions Cup.

With six newcomers in Uzair Casseim, Clayton Blommetjies, Kieron Fonotia, Blade Thomson, Kieran Hardy and Sam Hidalgo-Clyne already announced the Scarlets are pleased to confirm that two more names have been added to the in-coming contingent of Scarlets.

Fly half Angus O’Brien and loose forward Ed Kennedy, both 23, will join the Scarlets from Dragons and Australian side Randwick respectively.

Welcome Angus and Ed. Think O'Brien is a shrewd signing. Has a lot of ability and dragons didn't utilise him. I know nothing about ed Kennedy but another back 5 player

I have never been impressed with O’Brien but suppose that Dragons pack/team can make anyone look bad. Think he can really kick on here and will benefit from playing behind a good pack and inside top players like Hadleigh and Foxy.

Kennedy is impossible to find any info on and is a real punt however we don’t really have anything to lose and I’ll back Gareth Jenkins (if he’s still involved) and Pivac’s abilities to find rough diamonds all day long.

Well, Ed came as a complete surprise. While I think most of us have seen Angus play I doubt if many have seen Ed.
Competition in the back 5 of the forwards will be pretty fierce, maybe not immediately, but when everyone has settled in and begin to develop as Cummins has since Xmas.
It was only a few days ago that I was lamenting that we don't seem to be able to produce all that many local, second rows and ball-carrying 8 s. Answer - go further afield and find promising players from the 4 corners of the rugby globe.
Once again well done coaches you haven't waited for a deficiency to occur - you've tried  to fill the gaps before they become obvious.
Pob lwc i'r ddau ohonoch. Cerddwn ymlaen.

You can see Kennedy (wearing 19) on the second vid playing for Sydney Rays. I think it's him anyway.

O'Brien has always looked a tidy player to me... and can only improve with Stevo to guide him.

As for Kennedy - did anyone see that coming? Don't remember any rumours... the clever thing here is that he's a big Welsh-qualified second- or back-rower. I expect he's here as a bit of a development player, like Jake, but it'll be interesting to see what he brings to the squad, and presumably slots in as a 5 or 6 in the manner of Beirne or Rawlins... though we shouldn't expect too much too soon, I expect.

The last sentence in the article:

“Our recruitment policy and planning is as much about succession planning as it is the immediate future and we’re very excited to see how both continue to grow as young men both on and off the field.”

So we're looking for these two to develop over a year or two. Ed seems to have all the attributes- lets hope he can realise the apparent potential. .

Pivac amazes me, he must have someone scouting for him in Aus.

Ed Kennedy is as they say a big unit ..  a top schoolboy and Wallabies U20's rep 2014, he has been at one of the top Sydney clubs Randwick for the last 2 years as second row and blind side ...Randwick for those who don't know is arguably  the most successful club sides in Aus. When you look at more recent  past players and current...Campese, Ella twins , Poidevin, Kearns, Gregan  and Cheika, Beale and of course Eddie Jones who is said to be coaching somewhere ....

In 2017 Ed  played 15 games and scored 5 trys for the 'Wicks …no a bad nose for the tryline

Photo ...linky below ...scroll through alphabetical order ..its 2015 but he is in a scrum cap

http://www.spaimages.com.au/gallery.php?mode=gallery&id=31&page=61

FYI according to the Wicks web site he wont play any more games this year and is off to Llanelli .. probably for a big pre season with the coaching staff at PYS

see what I can do to find out more on weekend when Waratahs play Highlanders …

My thoughts on Wells...he  is going to get a Wallaby call up for the Irish 3 test series that has stopped him joining us

Not on the Scarlets site - is Davies expected to turn out for the Scarlets next season? I suspect he's more of a project player who'll be with Llanelli or another feeder club... welcome, anyway, and hope Matthew can step up to the big time!

You have to salute the club/management. They are building a larger squad with greater depth of quality players - serious progress being made. I imagine both Kennedy and Matthew Davies are seen as medium/long term project players. O'Brien will be challenging Dan for the bench spot from day 1.

We all remember how the last project player turned out - an International and Lion in the making!!!! Kennedy has some age grade pedigree I see so he may well blossom within the PYS environment. Welcome to all 3.

I'm afraid neither of our 2 new locks are anywhere  near being included in the Western Mule list of "Who's making a big impression in PRO14?" and of the 10 named, the Scarlets contribution is just pathetic little Jake Ball at 9 !!
This bit of inspired rugby writing/ investigative journalism by Anthony Woolford is not, of course, comparing talent or impact but players weights and is dominated by the Dragons and Blues.
Still it's nice to see the Dragons come out on top of something

This is the article:

I suspect the message here is that the Scarlets coaches look for other attributes - pace, a rugby brain, a good skill set, the ability to fill in gaps during the 6N etc., as well as character - the 'due diligence' we've discussed recently.

It takes a lot more than just bulk to make an effective rugby player, and our coaches are well aware of that.

But the title of the article, where Jake is at 9 is based on weight.... there was indeed another article which said which of the new signings would make an impact but I can't seem to find it.

A fact that is borne out by the knowledge that if selecting a Lions team to play this Saturday the two locks would probably be Itoje & James Ryan neither of whom could be called bulky.

I hope no-one is taking my post at face value as it was meant with a huge dollop of sarcasm. The clue was in the  "inspired investigative journalism" part, which any reasonable 7 year old could manage by clicking on the players' pen pictures in the official web-sites of their previous teams.

Never even heard of him tbh...just really like the concept of taking promising talent as project players from the Prem.

If the WRU get it right the Prem should be challenging the ITM Cup etc for talent...

I don't know if anyone has seen that video of Ed Kennedy that Crys16 uploaded to Twitter, but there is a case of the "Tadhg" about his play. Seems very dynamic in the loose and scored a few beauties that resembled Beirne's try in the final last year.

Welsh qualified too so won't have to ply his trade elsewhere if international honors come a-calling.
