Whose your all  time favourite player? It doesn't necessarily have to be the best either.Personally I have a few. Phil May Martin Gravelle, Simon Easterby.

However Johny Griff would be my choice. My rugby  period covers  from 1984 onwards so I couldn't really select players that I never saw live

Those that I have seen play (showing my age) but avoiding more recent players and currently playing, by period they played

Benny ..Legend
Grav legend
Delme legend
Barry Llewellyn...a prop with skills should be playing in todays game
Paul Ringer … crucified by English press for being too good
Ieuan Evans... class act
Mark Perego … a modern day flanker ahead of his time
Laurance Delany … gave all every game
Scott Q … before he left
Jiffy .. stayed longer than Barry John

That's a good list - you must be about the same vintage as me!

I have a particular soft spot for Benny, as he's the same age as me to a fortnight or so, and I first saw him play (unplayably!) at 15 in the Llanelli 7s.

A few others I'd include:

Norman Gale (hard man, captain, coach - and goal kicker!)
Terry Price - a fantastic talent
Clive John - talented and destructive 7
Roy Bergiers - must be on the list for 'that' try

There are any number of greats from more recent times, too.

Regan King was probably the best player I've seen in a Scarlets jersey so would get my vote. Finau, B. Davies were great to watch for excitement, Stevo, Dwayne two of my other favourite players and then KenO, Scott W in modern times.

Afeaki was a very decent signing IMO. Was a mainstay in our pack during his time with whether it was lock or 6. Also did a fair bit around the community.

Louw on the other hand...did he notch up 10 games for us? Dont think he did.

We could well be the same vintage ..my first memories at Stradey are sitting on the Tanner Bank wall in 1968 … Cardiff game with the ground packed and running on the pitch at full time to get GOE autograph. Try telling that to the young kids these days ...no OH&S just Dai Sayers (?) telling you off patrolling the wall

I have a 3 programs in a frame in my office that I collected in my youth … Llanelli v Boks (70) v AB (72) and Wallabies(75) having been at all these games … my AB program is signed by Benny on the cover. There was always this feeling that when Benny played we would win ...love to see his win %

I too would add Roy and Norman to the list but wanted to spread out a few names other than the 70s
Must not forget our mentor
Carwyn James ...never saw him play but an icon of our club and game for his coaching

My father would pick John Warlow as they knew each other at school , my grandfather who took me to the Boks game ..Albert Jenkins and Ernie Finch

My pre pro players would be Benny, Delme, Grav & Quinnell - all absolute legends of our club with a very honourable mention for Gareth Jenkins whose service to the Scarlets has probably been unmatched. Post pro era we have been blessed with some great servants; the homegrown talent is too numerable to try to select as it would wrongly insult those left out so I will look at non home players who have made a great contribution - Easterby, Hodges & Barclay with Tadgh Beirne very close behind.

Stevo for commitment

Benny and Grav for legendary status

Finau for entertainment

Mike Phillips for pure talent.

I think that Stevo was one of the most 'aware' player that I have seen. He seemed to know where everyone was (especially the opposition) at all times.

I am proud of myself, in that, I spotted that ability the first time I saw him play. I don't remember the opposition, but he played at centre.

(As noted on these pages in the past, my other 'talent spot' was a hooker by the name of Owens. I wish I could it more often, I could have made a fortune as an agent!  In realty though both players have rewarded me with their ability and committment over a number of years, thank you boys!

My favourite memory of Hercus was he made a clean break against wasps in the powergen cup final only to pull his hammy halfway to the try line

We're so fortunate to have had such talent coming through our ranks.  SQ and Stevo in recent years, Grav of course, the incomparable Regan King but I'd have to go with my 'first love' - one Andy Hill!

Andy hill was brilliant- cannot fathom how he was never capped  I do remember him playing in the probables/ possibles game at stradey school pitch as stradey Park was frozen.  Allegedly he didn’t play that well and he never had a look in again . How short sighted was that .

I'd throw in Dafydd James there too in your last category.

Dafydd James for prolific try scoring

Scott Q for his sheer disregard for the physics of how a massive bloke should run. And that forearm smash.

Ian Spaceman for making you take a breath every time he hit the line. (stoddart also in this category)

You can’t argue with that starting 15.  Although I may be tempted to change Martin Gravell for Ian Jones and Iwan for Perego.
When we look back over the decades, it’s a privilege to have had the opportunity to watch some of the very best players plying their trade at this great club.
It’s almost impossible to select a favourite 15 without leaving out a world class player here or there.  Some very classy players haven’t had a mention on here, at fly half we have had Benny, Jiffy (but not for long enough), Colin Stephens and Franco Botica (who was the first try professional we had (in my humble opinion) and who helped this club and players adjust to professional sport), to name but a few.

Well if we want to discuss something a bit more original, how about who would make your team of Scarlets exiles? I think I'd go for something like:

1. Rhodri Jones (Ospreys)
2. Kirby Myhill (Blues)
3. Nicky Thomas (Bristol)
4. Tom Price (Exeter)
5. Tadhg Beirne (Munster)
6. Josh Turnbull (Blues)
7. John Barclay (Edinburgh)
8. Nic Cudd (Dragons)
9. Aled Davies (Ospreys)
10. Steven Shingler (Ealing)
11. George North (Ospreys)
12. Scott Williams (Ospreys)
13. Adam Warren (Dragons)
14. Liam Williams (Saracens)
15. Dan Evans (Ospreys)

I did think of listing my 5 least favourite Scarlets players of all time but didn't want to be mean.

If you saw those touring games, you had more luck than I did!

Dad was from Burry Port, originally, so we mainly saw games during family visits - these would often be the matches against London Welsh over the Christmas period - some were epic battles, with Llanelli featuring Benny, Delme Thomas, Barry Llewellyn, Derek Quinnell, Andy Hill and the like, and the Welsh bringing JPR, Gerald Davies, John Dawes, Geoff Evans, Mike Roberts and so on. Epic battles in front of packed and jovial crowds.

The first game I ever saw was probably in 1959 v Aberavon... their centre Dai Thomas played a blinder and we lost, narrowly :(

Ah yes the fabled Albert Jenkins- you would probably need to be well into your hundredth year to have watched him play, but everyone who spoke of this legend did so in awe.

If my memory serves me well, we only lost 1 game that Jiffy played for us, which was an incredible feat, even if it too short a career in the Scarlets shirt.

Two.
I thought it was 1 defeat and a draw at the brewery field, but I’m not 100%sure

My grandfather told me back in the seventies that there would be an extra 5,000 in Stradey if he was playing

Good shout - never saw him play union, but did catch him playing league on TV - he was obviously a very classy player.

Yannick N'Gog

Mike Hercus
My favourite memory of Hercus was he made a clean break against wasps in the powergen cup final only to pull his hammy halfway to the try line

I remember that !!

Boys you're also forgetting Joe Ajuwa and the much-hyped Kiwi 10 Frazer Climo.

Jason barrel the New Zealander who was being touted as an all black.   Saw him playing at Aberavon- he took a pass 5m from the line and fell over as he scored. He had to be helped up as he was buggered and so unfit.  He used to amble around the park .

I liked Kees Meeuws - actually, a very good player, but unfortunately carrying a  lot of injuries before he ever showed up in Llanelli.

No Problem.

It's still a phenomenal record. I doubt there are many other (if any) players that have a 91% win ratio, who have played a decent amount of games for a team. Richie McCaw 'only' has 89% with New Zealand Smile.
