Our first XV couldn’t do a job on two occasions, might as well give the back up guys a go.

Only one team plays in red. (Sorry, Scarlet)

With half the squad with Wales or injured we've got no choice but to field the best of the rest.  I have a feeling it's going to be a painful season.🙄

Pivac said that Liam will see SOME rugby on that weekend, presume with Scarlets? If so I edit my team team above with Sanjay at 15, Rogers wing. Italy and Scotland name their squads tomorrow right?

Macload going off injured and not looking great tonight puts his Wales squad spot at risk.  If he was to pull out - what odds on Cubby being called up?

Basham probably next in line? If it is Cubby then we have Jac Morgan and Dan Davies in line. We are more stretched at 9 and 3, maybe even second row now.

the changes early 2nd half were needed and it’s shows what we have been missing for some time.
The tactics have been wrong for the  last 3 games.

If Sanjay is available I would seriously start with him at 15 and AOB at 10. Then if Sanjay is replaced second half Dan can come on at 10 and AOB move to full back.

This would be my team:
15. Liam
14: Prydie
13. Tyler Morgan
12. Steff Hughes
11. Steff Evans
10. AOB
9. Blacker
8. Kalamafoni
7. Cubby
6. Cassiem
5. Rawlins
4. Tex
3. Kruger
2. Taylor Davies
1. Rob Evans

Price, Jones, Sebastien, Kennedy, Jac Morgan, Homer, Dan, Asquith

Technically Cubby next actually. Suspect he will look at a more rounded back rower though.

Quite a few intriguing selection questions...challenge to pick a team as the coaches haven't really showed too much of a hand on these guys as yet....

Tyler, Cassiem, Prydie, Brew, Dan Davis, Jac Morgan, Tom Phillips, Rob Evans, Tex, Helps, Asquith, Nicholas, Conbeer, Costellow, Kennedy, Dylan Evans, Marc Jones, Taylor Davies.

The other question is who will captain the side, if it is Steff Hughes then he will start at 12 or 13

Many of these guys will have to come in to contention...so my best team as at now...

Rob Evans ( if fit, if not the Phil Price)
Marc Jones
Werner Kruger (if fit)
Lewis Rawlins
Tex Ratuva (if fit)
Blade Thompson ( if fit...and skipper if he is?)
Cubby Davies (if not called up)
Kalimafoni

Dean Blacker
Dan Jones
Steff Evans
Paul Asquith
Tyler Morgan
Aled Brew ( if available, if not then Rogers)
Angus O'Brien

Phil Price (unless he starts, then Dylan Evans)
Taylor Davies
Javen Sebastien
Uzair Cassiem
John Helps
Wil Homer
Costellow
Steff Hughes ( assuming not Capt)

Having released Cummins, pushed out Danny Drake on loan, have Shings out long term, and now likely to lose Lousi for 4-6 weeks, we are short in the 2nd row. Maybe we have to recall Drake?

Or may have to look at someone from the back row going in there as we are pretty well covered in the back row....maybe Kalimafoni, Cassiem, Phillips or Kennedy. Just a thought.
Probably Kalimafoni as we can secure Cassiem as an 8 behind him.

Confirmed as out injured mid-long term...
Jonny Mac
Tomi Lewis
Aaron Shingler

All of a sudden, our strength in depth doesn't look that great. I think Cassiem needs to start our next game, be it at 6 or 8.

I really don't think we will see Aaron in a Scarlets shirt again. If you look at our team announcements, when they list the players unavailable they put the reason in brackets as to why they are missing. e.g. Jonny Mac (Ankle), Rob Evans (neck). But the last couple of games there hasn't been anything next to Shinglers name.

will be an hard fight for our forward, Treviso can field players like Faiva, Herbst, Snyman, Ruzza, Halafihi and others dont call up with Italy.
Hope Liam Williams can back to the starting team and no other injuries during the next two weeks.
Will be a really difficoult match, hope no new covid restrictions and can go to the stadium.

We can pick a squad to play the next game but it won't be a TEAM as they have not played competitive games together.
It will take the squad at least half a dozen games to gel into a team.  By that time our season will be over as we will not have won a single game, and before I get slammed for negativity can someone tell me who we are going to beat in the Pro12 this season.?

Think Sanjay will be in the Welsh bubble & not be able to be released

What's the news at hooker? Is Daf Hughes fit to play? Did he play v Ospreys? Taylor Davies and Marc Jones? How do we see the pecking order now that Ken & Ryan are in the Wales bubble?

Posted By: PE SA
Date Posted: 12 October 2020 at 12:38pm
We knew we were going to be depleted. We always are. What's thrown us now is the added 4 weeks of the normal autumn internationals. We aren't having player releases, we recruited 2 good signings... One of which is straight in the Welsh side. We halted recruitment due to lockdown which is fair enough. But to me, this is showing the importance of NWQs.
Our depth is good. But when 16 players leave on international duty, that depth is borderline and makes things near impossible.
I don't see us doing it, but we need a 12 and tighthead more than anything. A 12 similar to Williams and Parkes, hard runner... And a tighthead. Thankfully Rob Evs is around so loosehead is OK at the moment but we are having to put a lot of faith in a lot of youngsters in key positions.
I remember positing in a topic on here about what our goals for the season should be. I put down European qualification would be outstanding considering the players that have now left will likely play the Derby games next in the Pro14 and then nothing til the end of the 6N break. If 6N is moved as is being discussed, it will be huge for us. But the next 8 to 10 weeks is going to be testing for the squad but a fine opportunity for some youngsters to stake a claim. Jac Morgan, Dan Davis, Sam Costellow, Osian Knott etc I'm sure a chomping at the bit to show what they can do.

Yes he did. Im sure he and Jac Morgan are next in line.
I wouldn't mind seeing us line up with 2 jacklers alongside kalamafoni. We had Cubby and Barclay in that winning season and Beirne at the breakdown. If we can get Jac Morgan alongside cubby and Kalamafoni that could give us a few turnovers for a few pens or counter attacks.

I am actually looking forward to seeing what our squad players and youngsters can do given an opportunity. Let's face it they cannot do much worse than our seasoned Internationals who have returned just one league point and one try for us so far. It will be a good opportunity to assess those who are most likely to have a future as first team players.

I'm not sure that the first round of international games are part of the official release period so whilst we'd be missing the Welsh players Tex and Blade may be available.

I'd go (there's no way this will be the team!):

Sanjay (needs a game)
Steff
Morgan
Asquith
Brew
Costellow
Homer
Kalamafoni
Cubby
Dan Davies
Tex
Blade
Kruger
Jones
Rob

Jac Morgan is a tough, intelligent player. He may not have the physical attributes of some of our other backrow players but more than makes up for it with his decision making, something many on here have been complaining we have been lacking in recent weeks. He has a real presence on the field
and who knows, he may even be a future captain.

Well he turned the ball over twice in less than 40 minutes worth of rugby which I thought was pretty impresive.

Cubby looked much better when he came on yesterday than he did against Munster. I’d be very happy for him to start against Benetton, provided he doesn’t now get a Wales call-up

The make up of our back row will depend on our lineout. Without Aaron Blade fits the go to athlete for us but it didn't work against Glasgow. I worry that all the verbal hype surrounding Jac Morgan from our coaches really show us the way they are thinking. Forward oriented. For all his many gifts he is not the 7 I see as a Scarlet 7 - good at the breakdown but also be capable of playing comfortably in the channels.

If you play 2 of Morgan, Cubby or Dan Davies then Casseim must start at 8 for his good lineout work in my opinion. I think Tex will be available for Benetton game & I also think that Pivac has earmarked Liam for that game. so here would be my team :-

15. Rogers 14. Steff 13. Tyler 12. Asquith 11. Conbeer 10. AOB 9. Blacker
1. Rob 2. Taylor 3. Javan 4. Rawlins 5. Helps 6. Kennedy 7. Cubby (Captain)8. Casseim

16. Daf Hughes 17. Price 18. Werner 19. Drake 20. Dan Davies 21. Homer 22. Dan 23. Steff Hughes.

My team is selected to play high tempo running rugby not to get into an arm wrestle with big Italian units.

For all his many gifts he is not the 7 I see as a Scarlet 7 - good at the breakdown but also be capable of playing comfortably in the channels.

If you play 2 of Morgan, Cubby or Dan Davies then Casseim must start at 8 for his good lineout work in my opinion. I think Tex will be available for Benetton game & I also think that Pivac has earmarked Liam for that game. so here would be my team :-

15. Rogers 14. Steff 13. Tyler 12. Asquith 11. Conbeer 10. AOB 9. Blacker
1. Rob 2. Taylor 3. Javan 4. Rawlins 5. Helps 6. Kennedy 7. Cubby (Captain)8. Casseim

16. Daf Hughes 17. Price 18. Werner 19. Drake 20. Dan Davies 21. Homer 22. Dan 23. Steff Hughes.

My team is selected to play high tempo running rugby not to get into an arm wrestle with big Italian units.

completely agree, an arm wrestle against Benetton is go to Treviso knowing to lose the match

I think they will start Steff Hughes and Dinky. But I too would want to see a change.

I appreciate the need to avoid the arm-wrestle.However,this would require a complete change of philosophy by the coaches....on the basis of what we've seen so far, something akin to a religious conversion would be needed:is Treviso somewhere on the road to Damascus?

I think Kalamafoni is undroppable as the only guy in the pack, and Halfpenny aside, the only player on the pitch getting over the gain line. If he doesn't start, we need him on the bench in my opinion. Jac Morgan has been named by both Mooar and Delaney to kick in both believing he has a huge future in the game. Let's also not forget he has been captain of all teams he has played in, even the captain v Ospreys couple of weeks back. I don't think it shows that they are forward orientated. But let's be honest, we need a forward game plan. It's somethi g that has held us back for years having not a plan b for want of a better phrase. We can chuck it about. We can attack. But developing a forward game on top of that is what we need. And perhaps what we are doing. Look at leinster for example. If they need a forward orientated game, they have one. But that's aided by good attacking play as well. We need both and I'm happy to see we are trying to develop that area. Our maul under Kelly is already showing signs of big improvement in only 4 games. Early days but it's something we certainly need in our armour.

For sure having a forward based game is a must for the occasions where weather and red zone attacking lineouts are concerned. However if we are intent on developing that part of our game why have we forgotten how to pass and attack.

I also have to disagree with you with regard to our lineout. It is appalling & has been for at least 3/4 years

I didn't mention our line out... I though Elias had a poor day throwing. Not all on him though I know. Don't get me wrong there's plenty to work on. And a new forwards coach isn't going to get things right straight away. I'm just seeing progress with a driving maul and a pack beginning to be a pack. As I said, still early days. But definitely an area we need.
I agree the skills recently.

Yes you are right it is early. Richard Kelly made a name for himself in the Premiership by getting a pack playing like a pack - an 8 man team if you like. I really hope he succeeds because that has been a weak area for us over the years. However I do get a feeling that this coaching ticket have decided to give more emphasis to tight forward exchanges at the expense of our all court attacking game.

Nobody would be happier if we develop a pack that can take advantage of red zone chances whether they are driving lineouts or pick and go attacks but not at the expense of our historic attacking ambitions.

I also think there are signs of improvement in the pack, but have been surprised that Lousi has not become the main line-out option(there could be reasons I haven't noticed, but he was primarily a line-out fwd before coming to Llanelli.)However,if it is the coaches' intention to play an attritional, forward dominated mode of rugby, the club will need to spend a lot more to win any silver-ware that way.

Lousi, if I am correct, came from League so lineout play was something he was working on in NZ prior to him signing for us. He, like Tex & Blade, were good fits for our long standing style of play - all good in the loose with good hands & offloading. Tex & Sam have had their problems with discipline so they are going to have to improve in that area. However, as you rightly point out, they are not the personnel who can make us serial winners in attritional forward oriented games.

Kalamafoni's stats are incredible. He made 32 tackles against Glasgow, and 27 carries for 77 metres.

He's probably the first name on the team sheet at the moment. The coaches see Cassiem as an out and out Number 8, which is why he's not being selected.

Richard Kelly said last night that the lineout system against Glasgow was impacted by losing Lousi, and that it had been better against Munster.

Checking the stats, we had a 75% lineout success against Munster, and 88% against Glasgow!

Kelly is clutching at straws. Our lineout 1st half on Sunday was worse than with 14 men 2nd half.

2 reasons Stef - Sione is doing a hell of a lot of work so some rotation & Casseim is more suited to my idea of a fast open game looking to run around them not through.

1 Evans 2 Jones 3 Sebastian 4 Ratuva 5 Rawlins 6 Kennedy 7 Morgan (C) 8 Kalamafoni

Do we have Tex for this fixture?
Thought Morgan Jones went very well with Tex. Big and physical. I'd have him bench instead of Helps personally.

I thought Mathias and OConnor showed up well too which is encouraging moving forward as we need a loose and tighthead.
Any news on conbeer? Seemed to have been limping off.

After the last few games, including a good run out against the dragons, there is clear competition for places. This is a very big game for us and Benneton will be a tough team out there.

Most importantly we need to find out mojo. Clearly absent in the first two league games. I though Gus played really well at 10 on Friday. He challenged the line on regular occasions and at least fixed the defence. He also had options coming off him as he was taking it up to the line, which will cause most defences problems.

Prydie at full back looked really good and both Tyler and Asquith deserve another run out together again.

I would go for
15 Prydie
14 Conbeer
13 Tyler
12 Asquith
11 Steff
10 Angus
9 Homer
8 Kalamafoni
7 Jack Morgan
6 Kennedy
5 Rawlings
4 Tax
3 Hagan
2 Marc
1 Rob

Subs: Phil, Taylor, Kruger, Helps, Cassiem, Dan Jones, Steff Hughes and Rogers

I am sure that getting guys back is being constantly discussed between Pivac and Delaney. I was hoping that we would see Liam, Patchell & Cubby for urgently needed minutes this weekend. Patchell is now a non starter as Sheedy is still with Bristol as they may be stepping in to replace Wasps. Hopefully we could see the other two.

Patchell and Liam will likely get game time against France. I wouldn’t expect to see any of the Wales squad players until well into 2021

By which time our season will more than likely be over, European competition too.

Surely that can't be correct Stef. What about local derbies & Europe? I agree as above about Patchell. Liam is a surprise as how on earth he is deemed fit to play France without any rugby for months is frankly nonsense.

That’s what is being suggested on the grapevine. The France game is a warm-up it’s perfect for Liam if he’s fit

It should not be a surprise that we will be without the internationals until after the 6N.ots been talked about for a fair few weeks. In a normal season we would have player release if a player wasn't involved etc. We would also have them after the autumn internationals.but these are not normal times. The players will be in camp in their bubble building some team cohesion I suppose ahead of the 6N. With Europe starting is it the same weekend or the week after the last international, that should be obvious enough that we are without them for that period. We MIGHT have them for Christmas derbies, but I'm not holding my breath. Its a season without nearly 20 players. First teamers. If we have them before the end of the 6N I will look at it as a massive bonus. Its a season that is going to be huge for the likes of Tom Rogers, Ryan Conbeer, Sam Costellow, Jac Morgan, Morgan Rees etc.
Its certainly going to be an interesting season for us. Hopefully a few of the youngsters that will have an opportunity will take it to give further selection headaches.

Well not having them back for Europe/derbies etc is news to me. If that is mirrored throughout the Celtic nations then we can forget any of our teams competing in Europe as I cannot see the English premiership or the top 14 standing for being without their International players for what is effectively mid October 2020 to end of March 2021 - 5 months plus.

It’s the same for the English and French sides. Nobody is getting precious about it this season.

Well the French sides got pretty precious about the Autumn campaign. They only reached a last minute deal to safeguard the Wales game. Two squads of 31 players playing 3 games maximum suggest to me that they are taking their top 14 competition seriously. Sponsors may have something to say about what is effectively downgrading the European pool stages to a 2nd 15 competition also.

It's the same in some respects but for pro14 teams like us, Leinster, Munster, Treviso, Edinburgh etc. we're significantly disadvantaged because of the volume of players we've got in the national squads.

As I said on twitter, the WRU couldnt care less about the regions, we are just an unfortunate inconvenience.

Sad to say I am rapidly falling out of love with rugby union and the ridiculous club v country stuff. If I lived further north, I would get a St Helens season ticket instead once crowds are allowed back. The game is being ruined for those that support the regions.
