That’s a strange move by the Ospreys. He would’ve played a lot of rugby for them this season.

Perhaps it’s a financial decision rather than a rugby decision.

Not sure about that he'd be 4th choice and with Bradley & Beard pushing for World Cup selection and on form he'd be struggling.

Ospreys have a few other second rows coming back from injury, so they are well blessed.

I think it makes good business, because by the 20/21 season Ospreys would have had the Blues to harden and get him fit, and ready for them with AWJ + 1 missing for the World Cup.

Can someone remind me who the O's have at 2nd row - Bradley, Beard, AWJ & Ashley are the ones that come to my mind. If thats it then it seems a little odd given that AWJ will be taken good care of and the position is pretty atritional.

Ashley, Beard, Bradley, AWJ, Nemsadze.

Following discussions between both regions and the national team management, it was agreed he would make the temporary move up the M4 to allow him the best opportunity to get more rugby and assist his international ambitions going into a World Cup year.

There have been rumours over the past few weeks they have been trying to move a second row on. Bradley Davies to Cardiff and Lloyd (Peers) Ashley to Dragons were doing the rounds.

Thornton missed most of last season with an injury, but played 20+ games the previous two seasons. With AWJ and Bradley having their game time managed on NDCs there would’ve been plenty of opportunities for both him and Beard.

Suppose 5 2nd rows is ok - we have Jake, Tom, David, Cummins & Lewis with Blade covering back row and 2nd row if needed.

That's what I've heard.

Blues been looking for a 2nd row for weeks, Swansea got 6, plus a youngster I think, so it does make sense.

Keeps a Welsh player fit and playing, and helps 2 regions.

Sense to me, maybe we should just take it on its face value.

Shame that we couldn't manage to hold onto 3 centres as that's eaiser to rotate.

Thornton won’t ever be a top class second row unless he can get more physical. Talented player but too slight to make an impact.

Looks like the Blues have a major coup here.  The kind of 8 we were looking for not so long ago.

Welsh-qualified South African full-back Carl Meyer and young hooker Liam Belcher are also set to join the Blues from the Dragons.

Samu Manoa is a cracking signing for the Blues and will take some workload off Big Nick as a carrier. Carl Meyer has potential too but Liam Belcher (who started his career with Cardiff I think) is too small.

Ulster have signed Ireland-qualified fly-half Billy Burns from Premiership side Gloucester on a 2 year deal.
