Thought it might be a good idea to start an all purpose thread for RWC19.

First game is done and Japan beat Russia 30-10 with a hat trick for pacy winger Kotaro Matsushima. It's blatantly obvious though that in the heat and humidity the fitter team is going to win most games. The Russians were dead on their feet after matching Japan for 50 minutes.

Japan are a fast and skilful team but they need to learn it's alright to play for territory at times and not try to score every time they have the ball.

Indeed the conditions will be a huge advantage for the Japanese and the fittest sides
Hopefully it augers well for Wales. We have a fit side and mobile back row. Got to keep an eye on Fiji though , the heat humidity dry hard pitches is music to their ears.

Is ITV the only broadcaster for the U.K, or do any of the other channels have it?

Listening to Shane and there being no comment on the scrum techniques plus an overwhelming fear of having Clive Woodward dispensing pearls of obvious stuff.

Is there an alternative?

How France managed to keep 15 men on the pitch I do not know.  Poor reffing. Argentina loose because of poor, narrow defence, should have won that.

Some observations and questions from the France v Argentina match.

What is the difference between contact in the air when fielding an up and under and in the line out?
Late in the second half, Penaud was first up to field the ball and an opponent arrived second and made contact while he was in the air. He landed badly and remained on the floor. When play stopped, the TMO drew the ref’s attention to it. Despite this, he was perfectly happy with what happened.

Anyone else see this?

Rolling mauls - are you allowed to join in front of the ball carrier? If you are, that’s fine, as there were a few with an all out stampede to join in beyond the ball.

Offsides, even more obvious than don’t get blown at y Parc, were ignored. People arrive in certain places so much earlier than expected would surely prompt the question in the ref’s head as to how they’d managed that.

A few above shoulder tackles also seemed to by-pass Gardner’s consciousness. The TMO caught on and became a bit more proactive.

Would welcome some clarification, please.

Sets it up for the two games v England. Do you see either beating Eng? The Argies had a fearsome scrum, it seemed.

The officiating of the offside line from rucks is a joke nobody bothers being behind back foot anymore.
Picamoles got away with one just before the drop kick that was ridiculously
She asks why i still can't answer. I guess its in the blood.

Completely agree. Enforce offside more and you favour the attacking side, it's no wonder scrum halves feel they have to box kick it away so often. How France weren't given a card I have no idea.

Good start by New Zealand but they themselves would feel they can still improve. Their scrum was beaten by SA later on in the game a few times was the only weakness I could see.

Nothing really new so far apart from how much it seems the Pumas scrum has improved. During the Rugby Championship they were given a tough time but they were on top against France. The French team of the first half full of off loads great support lines off dangerous runner Penaud would trouble England. The France of the 2nd half will be picked off by the men in white.

Well done to Wyn Jones & all other Scarlets selected.

Scotland were pretty woeful & look as if they may struggle to get to the last 8 with a big game against Japan last up. Either way they won't be going past the last 8.

Decent first half from England, I'd imagine they'd run away with it in the second. That tackle on Vunipola though - wow.

England definitely give far too many penalties away, better sides than Tonga will make them pay for this but fair play to Tonga for their performance so far.

And also this ref has been brilliant plus I think Ugo Monye is a really good summariser.

Sam Lousi played the full 84 mins? Anyway, brutal counter rucking at 76mins, turnover ball. Like it !👍
