Sadly our run of wins at this level came to a sudden and inglorious end tonight. We were soundly beaten 22-3 by a side whose forwards were better than ours at the set pieces and who had a kicker who kicked prodigious distances. The Blues side had the more limited plan of kicking for position and either stealing, or slowing down our possession and putting pressure on us. Unfortunately we didn't have the power or guile to do much about it. The Blues paid for it in part with two yellow cards in the second half but we still couldn't score against their streetwise defence, usually managing to knock on, pass forward or yield a penalty for crossing before losing possession. If we are to beat them in the return fixture we need to do a great deal of work on our front 5 forwards and formulate a game plan that we can implement under pressure but still use our talented backs.

They need to start by picking the best front 5!!
You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.

The Blues 18s must be good the young Scarlets had hammered all comers ,Wasps Worcester Ospreys RCG and Dragons who are the only team to give them a game but we had put four tries past all opponents .

Can,t wait for the re-match at the Parc

Apart from dominating the set pieces and competing well at the breakdown, the Blues line was up very quickly on our backs. In circumstances like these, I feel it is up to the half-backs and in particular the outside half, to chip over the line and turn the opposition so that any lucky bounce and we're in with a chance. Do that a couple of times and the opposition becomes more hesitant and their line holds back for just long enough to give us space.
I don't know whether we underestimated the Blues, but we certainly weren't ready for the intensity of their play.

The backrow played reasonably well, despite being on the backfoot. Harry Randall was lively. (when taking one quick tapped penalty he was tackled well short of 10m. He presumably thought the ref would whistle for another Scarlets penalty and held on to the ball, but the penalty was given against him for holding on!!) Other than that the Blues tactics and tenacity really negated what the Scarlets had come to do ie run the ball on the artificial pitch.
