And Racing 92 on Saturday....

After a somewhat mixed start to our Pro 14 campaign, the Heineken Champions Cup begins this weekend & we face a Racing 92 side who have endured a similarly mixed start to their season, winning 4 of their opening 7 matches. As usual they have a strong squad & include a few familiar faces in Simon Zebo, Finn Russell & Donnacha Ryan to name a few.

Thoughts on the challenge that awaits us on Saturday?

They are averaging 23 points a game & conceding 17 but they seem to be struggling for consistency somewhat.

In terms of selection I would envisage we will be going in with the same pack as Dan Davies is not, from what I have read on here, in our European squad. Backs wise I would hope (& pray) that Foxy is back for us as I really feel we missed him defensively on Saturday.

Think Rob Evans and Cummins will be back in to the 23 & I share your hopes about Foxy. I would love to see Steff also included but that is a big call.

Selection will depend to some extent on fitness...

Foxy coming back in would be a huge plus... Rob and Cummins would improve the options available, though Bulbring and Price (the prop) are none too shabby as alternatives.

Prydie was injured and may be out (anyone know?) so Steff has every chance to be included. So I'd probably go with this side (if the assumptions about fitness/injury are correct):

Halfpenny

McNicholl
Foxy
Parkes
Steff

Patch
Cawdor

Wyn Jones
Ken O
Samson
Ball
Cummins
Kennedy
Boyde
Blade

Subs:
Elias
Rob Evans
Kruger
Bulbring
Macleod

Hidalgo-Clyde
Dan Jones
Asquith
I share no-one's ideas. I have my own.

Good shout. I'd keep Dai Bull in but that's all, I think.
We really owe Racing one after our last gane against them at PyS. They absolutely tonked us; bonus point by half time.
We need to put them away this time.

Thats a cracking team I have to say with only Aaron & Cubby missing from our absolute top 23. My worry is the amount of gametime some of our players/combinations have had. That is what it is and the excitement will build through this week.

I think Asquith will start on the wing and no outside half on the bench.

No place for Fonotia? -just shows how strong the squad is in the 3/4 s - can't say I disagree if Foxy is fit. I'd be tempted to start Asquith on Priday's wing as he has a greater physical presence than Steff, but I'd certainly have Steff on the bench - few others can dance around tacklers in limited space and he would be even more dangerous against tired legs.  I would also keep Price on the bench unless Rob has actually played some rugby since coming back from injury. I know Boyde  managed it on Saturday but I wouldn't want to risk it with Rob.

Matthew Carley will be the man in the middle on Saturday.

ETA: And looking ahead to next weekend we have Romain Poite.

Some very good alternatives suggested here... I did consider the idea of no 10 on the bench, but decided it'd be risky if Patch got injured early... the weather forecast isn't too good for the weekend, so Dan J's kicking game might come in handy - though the forecast was wrong last Saturday!

Asquith must be very close to making the team... perhaps he'll start with Steff on the bench.

Cummins or Bulbring? Not much in it - Cummins has been preferred when fit, but may not be 100% yet...
If Rob Evans isn't quite there, Price won't let us down.

Oh, and Fonotia... clearly, he's back up to Foxy, so if Foxy's fit, he'll start - and it may be better to have X-factor players on the bench such as Steff or Asquith.

Thankfully our availability has improved dramatically since the start of the season. Only Aaron, Cubby Jonathan & Lewis not ready yet. Sure beats 14 out!!!!

I agree with you Scarletnut. He seems pretty assured when he has come on.  Don't know if his kicking game from hand & tee are as good as Dans but he does have some gas which is a bonus.

Do you think? I thought we played a little poorly against the Os when he came on.

O'Brien has greater pace, acceleration and ability to beat a man. He is also not averse to chipping over the top of a rush-defence, which if done occasionally, early on, tends to slow the rush down as they become unsure whether they will be able to carry on charging or will have to stop, turn to and defend an awkwardly bouncing chip.
If you take Phil Bennett and Stephen Jones as the two pinnacles of Scarlets 10s then Dan is more of the Stevo mould and Angus is more like Phil. Which you choose depends on the type of game you want to play, but I think it's Dan's current form that's given Angus the opportunity.
