Agree completely with GPR here.  We are far more in need of  5, 8,  10 than another  7 to complement our already impressive collection of 7s -Cubby, McLeod, Davis and Boyde

Been having a quick scout of Young’s stats in his last few games in a struggling Wasps team..

Vs Northampton - 34m made, 2 clean breaks, 3 defenders beaten. 16 tackles made, 0 missed.
Vs Harlequins - 24m made, 2 defenders beaten. 9 tackles made, 0 missed.
Vs Bath - 18m made, 1 defender beaten. 19 tackles made, 0 missed.
Vs Toulouse - 35m made, 1 clean break, 2 defenders beaten. 13 tackles made, 1 missed.

He is a complete player. Would be an excellent signing.

Absolutely no consideration needed. If he's available, snap him up. Match winner.

Young would be an outstanding player to sign.

We'd have another player in the back row who's good at the breakdown as well as being versatile enough to play all over the back row.

Shingler 6
Cubby 7
Young 8

That's a very balanced back row while also having another breakdown presence on the field.
Think, think, think - it's a thinking man's game!! - The Great Carwyn James.
Just for our SA friends - Weste is die beste!

If he’s willing to join us he can play wherever he wants! Excellent player.

He is a good player but not sure he us a No.8
Still hoping Cassiem will come good in time and it will help him if the team are doing better.

I too hope that Cassiem comes good. The 2 SA’s have both struggled to settle down (which is a little bit strange considering the number of SA’s we already have in the squad) and Cassiem does appear to have had a lot of bad luck with injuries and a suspension to boot. He also hasn’t had a run of games in a settled team.
Tom Young would be a great signing for us, especially if they (Wales) continue not to select him for squads.

We need to get real in our desire to sign Thomas Young. He is indeed a very fine player - an International quality player not playing Internationals as described by his dad. All this talk of him coming to us and playing at 8 in my opinion is total nonsense.

We have a very fine stock of 7's in Cubby, Boyde & Dan Davis with Josh McLoud & Blade able to step in if necessary. We are and have been for many years desperate for a carrying No 8. Young, for all his many virtues, is not a carrying No 8, neither was John Barclay who lets be honest played there because there was no serious alternative. Thomas is only slightly bigger than Boyde and look how underpowered he has been made to look in recent months.

Young is no fool and he knows he will only be considered at 7 for Wales. If he is going to return to Wales then he will, in my opinion, be seeking some cast iron assurances as did Rhys Patchell that he will be the starting 7 for the team he joins. This will not, of course, preclude him from moving position in times of great need but fundamentally he is a 7. Without these assurances how will he ever be able to push his Welsh case which is the only reason he will return.

I think we played Barclay at eight because he did a ton of work at the breakdown and around the field that allowed Shingler and Cubby to roam a bit more and was hugely influential to our style of play. When we were playing well we only really lost to Leinster. Should we be changing our whole ethos just to beat one team? Wouldn't we rather have the team play like it's been playing for the last two seasons? Sure, let's work on plans B and C, a deeper squad, young players in certain key positions but as noted many times on this forum, we miss Beirne, Barclay, Shingler and Cubby and arguably that's one of the key factors in how we haven't been able to replicate the same style. Beirne is an irreplaceable loss, two are inured, which leaves us with Barclay's shoes to fill. Young sees like the closest fit and he's available.

Young is indeed 102 kgs, don't know about Casseim. McLoud is 110 kgs, Falatau is 112 kgs, Keddie is 114 kgs, Coetzee is 115 kgs, Conan is 115kgs and Nick Williams 120+. The fact that Casseim may be 98 only makes me wonder all the more why we signed him. There is a theme developing here which is nowhere near a new story - a good big un beats a good little un. Clearly there are exceptions to the rule - not many but some - Stander is one - exceptionally powerful carrier for his size but they are the exception not the rule.

If I was picking a current " Fantasy Welsh XV" regardless of cost then Thomas Young would probably be in it at 7. But  Cubby, at his best would be very close, if not ahead. If I was in charge of Scarlets recruitment I would be looking to spend our money on those positions where we have a much greater need -4/5 , 8, 10 and wing if McNicholl or Steff leaves.

Conan is 110 according to the Leinster website. There is no way Keddie is 114 after seeing him on Saturday... Screech, however, is a lump.

A good big un might beat a good little un in a straight up "I'm going to bash into you" contest, but isn't the point that out style of play was more a team of smart, quick, skilled little uns will out-think and run around you good big uns?

Another exceptional carrier for his weight in the Munster number 8 Botha who I would guess is smaller than McLoud.

Not sure what the 8 logic is, but to be competitive at the highest level we need 2 absolutely top notch 7’s, such is the attrition level.

With Barclay and Cubby we had that, and we were blessed with the problem of having both available at times...but more often than not one or the other would be injured..Boyde became a more than handy cover.

Cubby has played 3 full games this season and is injured, he played less than half our games last season..it’s a hugely physically demanding shirt to play in...and although we think of Cubby as a young lad, he’s 29 this year, and it’s unlikely he can continue to take the strain of being first choice 7 whenever he is available...a shirt rotation, at an equal std, is desirable.

The big takeaway from this season has to be back 5 forward depth, back row in particular.
