Harbury College ( linked with Gloucester rugby) and Clifton College ( linked with Bristol) are two examples of how the English clubs poach young players over the border with scholarships or bursaries and then hook them into the English system. Cheap investment for them to exploit Welsh lads . The WRU have failed totally in countering these sort of actions and should be setting up attractive packages in Wales with the regions on an aggressively marketed e basis. Keeping talent in Wales is key with our small player base!

Pretty obvious area for attention but that assumes that the WRU are fit for purpose doesn't it? Why would anyone have faith in the WRU when you study the debacle that is Project Reset?

That's the role that CCTA plays surely and the bursaries are not required

Sorry, I honestly don't think it's the WRU's role to set up these arrangements, as primarily the colleges are education establishment first and foremost and then linked up to the RFU and clubs.
We in the west can't complain because of CCTA relationship with the Scarlets is quite good. We need the Welsh Government to think outside of the box of further education in Wales, but money is always an issue, as in reality the positions taken by the young players are subsidised by some of the fees paid by the better off in the world.

I think the WRU & the HF/FE (which ever one it is) providers need to get together & get some form of plan in place to try to minimise the amount of people going over the bridge like this.

Its a very difficult situation. Don’t want to stand in the way of these young boys, but don’t want to lose them either.
As an aside let’s not pretend we don’t offer players additional perks when they move here. |

True Sospan Mawr, but to me, the worrying issue for me is English clubs (for that read money) attracting young Welsh school/college level players out of the Wales game into the England game. Gloucester and Bristol's links with the two 'border' colleges may well primarily be to poach future players cheaply for their clubs BUT, it also risks those players who step up, being sucked into the England system as well and even moreso if there is a Welsh grandparent in the family ! Its a big lose lose to Welsh rugby when the costs of retaining the young talents cannot surely be more than going after players 3 years later at large cost or just losing them totally over the border. I think we may have got George North at Llandovery College on a deal but not sure, but these situations are far and few between it seems unless I am reading the wrong papers and Harbury/Clifton are big predators of young Welsh school/youth players. Lets face it the English clubs come with cheque books anyway for young regionally released players but this an even earlier poaching job. Anyway rant over !!

Are the 4 boys from Carmarthen rugby players, because Hartpury offer other sports as well. It is difficult our education system has fallen slowly back so much over the past 50 years that we need to address that, the benefits will then follow.

Call me a cynic but I suspect here its not a case of the mantra "Education, education , education" but "money ,money, money" , and of course you cant fault any youngsters and families to be offered sporting/educational deals. My issue is why can't the WRU lead the way with the Regions working with educational establishmentsto address this talent leak. These talented young boys are known to all the youth coaches and are no doubt in the Under15-16 Welsh system , yet we allow them to jump over the bridge to England. It seems false economy to me anyway

Hartbury College & University offer educational excellence from A levels through to degrees. Why we in Wales cannot offer equally excellent educational opportunities is beyond me. Talented young sports people can be tempted by the excellent facilities and of course bursaries.
The Welsh Government were apparently prepared to contribute £4million a year for a region in North Wales. Enough said.

You can’t blame anyone for making use of the facilities on offer across the border where we have to be clever is by monitoring the players going to play in these colleges. We have to keep in touch with them letting them know there is a pathway open to their home region. After they finish their studies then if good enough we can welcome them back with open arms.
I am aware there is the Exiles programme that identifies players at a young age across the border that should now be enhanced with the rise in players going for further education in England. Perhaps the WRU could consider opening its own college within Wales that provides education as well as quality sports facilities or use colleges within South Wales but is responsible for the training of the boys and girls at the Vale and other suitable sites. This could be part funded by other sports organisations in Wales and the Welsh government. It is high time we had a proper sports college/ university in Wales similar to Loughborough and Bath , if done properly it could Pay for itself with studentss from outside Wales having to pay their way. |
