Good news to read that Phil John has signed another year extension to his contract.

From the western mail:

The Scarlets have confirmed experienced loose-head prop Phil John has signed an extension to his contract keeping him at the region for next season.

John is among a dying breed of one-club players having joined as an apprentice in 1999 and has since gone on to make over 300 appearance for the region as well as dozens of appearance for feeder clubs Llanelli and Llandovery.

The loosehead prop, who celebrated his 34th birthday on Saturday with a victory over Dragons at the Millennium Stadium, said: “I’ve been with the club for 16 seasons and it’s very exciting to look forward to another season with a club that has such a strong heritage and tradition.”

Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac added: “We have a number of young local boys making a name for themselves and being able to call on a player of Phil’s experience is beneficial to us.”

John is the latest player to extend his contract with the Scarlets ahead of season 2015-16 alongside Liam Williams, Ken Owens, Rob Evans, George Earle and Lewis Rawlins who have all penned new deals with the region.

Rhodri Jones, Samson Lee, Jake Ball and Scott Williams have also signed national dual contracts. Amongst the new names added to Scarlets’ squad are Glasgow and Canadian winger DTH van der Merwe, outside-half Aled Thomas, tight-head prop Will Taylor from Wasps, lock Tom Price from Leicester Tigers and Welsh qualified prop Dylan Evans from Australia.

Great news! Phil was probably going to stay anyway, but I'm glad it's in a playing capacity instead of just coaching!

Great servant and in the last 4/5 years he's really become a good Pro12 player. Glad to see him here for another year.

We now have, in the front row an almost ideal mix of age, youth, experience, technique, mobility, strength and athleticism. Obviously not in the same players but Pivac now has at his disposal the means to challenge almost any opposing scrum. Now all he needs to do is get to know the opposition's strengths and weaknesses to decide who starts and who comes on as a replacement.
The ultimate aim must be to be in this position throughout the team.

We've seen how crippling a front row crisis can be this season so sensible to have plenty in stock, especially in a world cup year.

Phil's shown no signs of fading away yet so hopefully we can expect another very solid season from him.

Brilliant news and these new names are getting me bloody excited.

Local boy Phil, shares the Scarlet ethos (and NDS)

Real shame we can't find more like him---local to me is South West Wales.
Be careful when you pick up the stick.........IT MAY BE THE WRONG END!!!!!!!!!!
