I like many enjoyed a great weekend's viewing of the rugby watching 4 games. If I was a big wig on the IOC I would be scheduling an urgent conference with the French Sports Minister. France, of course, have some previous on making a right pig's ear of major sporting events but the events with fans in Marseilles & Bordeaux over the weekend were ridiculous.

As for the Musical Director of the tournament I imagine he will be placed on gardening leave on the same Island that Papillon served his time. As I said I watched 4 games which equals 8 anthems - none of which I recognised!!!!!

France hosting the Olympics in 2024 could well become a very forgettable event.

The anthems are being sung by a childrens choir of under priveleged  kids. Great idea but in practice it’s unworkable due to the sheer volune of different languages

Midi Olympique reporting that they may stop using the choir.

I'm assuming that the children making up the choir are French speakers. Why not let them practice/sing the French anthem before all French games instead of attempting the almost impossible and become competent in 20 different tunes.

They are obviously a trained choir. Trained singers don't know all the languages that they have to use. Instead, as part of their training, they learn the International Phonetic Alphabet which means they can sing in any language.

I prefer the nodding donkey form of singing other national anthems like Minister for Wales Taffy John Redwood when “nodding “ the Welsh anthem 😉

Are the kids even singing live? As far as I can see (apart, maybe, from the France game) what we get are recordings blasted from loudspeakers of pre-recorded versions - which invariably have a tempo which is too quick.

A live band can (with a sympathetic conductor) adjust things to the speed at which the crowd is singing; that's impossible with a recording.

It is an embarrassment, even if the motive was a good one.

Whilst clearly not being something I can pin on the organisers another two episodes which have cast a very poor light on this World Cup. Firstly a 37 year Irish lady was apparently attacked in the early hours of Monday morning by three assailants, found by some Welsh supporters & hospitalised.

Then to cap off a difficult week for Bordeaux 12 cases of botulism hospitalised 7 with, I believe one death to date. Dodgy sardines getting the blame. Not the headlines the French Rugby Federation or indeed World Rugby organisers would have been looking for.

'Normal' anthems are back, which at least means someone is listening in the event organisers.
